GM to Build Driverless Cars by 2015 - pic

http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-...8010700781.jpg
In an illustration provided by General Motors all-around collision warning using traditional sensing is shown. Automakers and parts suppliers are working on similar systems, and GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner will devote part of a Tuesday speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to electronically controlled driverless cars. The plan is to use an inexpensive computer chip and an antenna to link vehicles equipped with radar-based cruise control, lane change warning devices, electronic stability control, satellite global positioning systems and digital maps. (AP Photo/General Motors, ho) (AP)

THE OUTLOOK: General Motors Corp. says that within the next 10 years it should be able to produce a car that drives itself. Other car companies and parts suppliers are working on similar systems.

HOW THEY MIGHT WORK: The plan is to use an inexpensive computer chip and an antenna to link vehicles equipped with radar-based cruise control, lane change warning devices, electronic stability control, satellite global positioning systems and digital maps.

POSSIBLE EFFECTS: Such a system could prevent crashes and reduce congestion. Government regulations, liability laws and privacy concerns would need to be addressed.

Yeah, but if you fill up with ethanol your car will get a DWI for being over the alcohol limit.

I was watching a show on this, since they are driven by computer. You have less accidents and more efficient use of highways. I would love it to get in the car, get my book out and say miami.

It would *really* be cool if they connected at the bumpers, forming a chain, and you could turn off your engine. Each car would have an electric motor as well, and they would share electricity and workload.

That's going to be awesome. Doubt it will ever be allowed on the mark though. Then you won't be able to get ripped off from insurance companies.

If you can't find buyers for your cars I guess they have to drive themselves.

Yes, i know about the awards and i happen to like the CTS and Enclave. But i have yet to really see these cars on the road. I am back n forth in NY and NJ and have yet to see the all new Impala. There sales are declining rapidly and i think they would be better served spending money on everyday cars, would be a shame to see GM go down for good...

this makes 0 sense....for I-95 (for example) to be retrofitted to allow such a thing....it would be just as cheap to turn it into a light rail system with constant stops (and private cars)....kinda like ummmm logans run

cars are not the future....with an ever expanding population, some form of mass transportation (not affected by traffic) is the future....period
