Has any website with tons of traffic ever gone under?

I couldn't think of any websites that had a ton of traffic and still folded.
Mainstream or porn.

I'm sure there probably are some that closed because of the cost to maintain a staff; so I guess my question really is:

If a website achieves huge traffic is that site guaranteed to survive as long as they maintain the traffic and keep staff low?

PS: I'm just betting someone names an obvious website that failed and it just slipped my mind right now.

traffic is meaningless if you dont know what to do with it

Look at all the sites that are no more after the net boom exploded. If the traffic aint buying its worthless.

Ok, but was that a "Brand issue"?
Did playboy try to expand into revenue from other brands?

I mean, if they had put up banners to paysites would they have made it?

My question bacially is, if the traffic is there and you work with it then it's a lock right?

Yeah, pets.com was just a bad idea.

If they had just had stupid pets pics and videos and used ppc advertising things would have been really different I think.

Go.com has got to be the biggest bust I ever saw. They still have traffic though.

I mean, they had Dan Rather of ABC news saying "ABC NEWS, part of the Go Network" and still fucked that up. Dayummmmm!

Why would it be a lock? Unless you have a great type in domain, it's never a lock, things change, what's hot one year, is old news the next...

If you pick a random site on the net, and try to predict what will happen to it's traffic/income in 5 years, I think it is more likely that it will go down than up...

Yup, they had every advertisement you could imagine that was ever aired on TV (and then some). They went the paysite model as well for advertising professionals but since then, they kind of fadded out of the public light.

mine had an obscene amount of traffic, and went under.. but there were mitigating circumstances.

Golden rule, never mix violence(especially real) with porn.
You will lose everytime.

You did nothing wrong but the system doesn't work that way.

First off, no one really knows how much traffic a site gets except the owner, you can guess all you want about what a site does, but your probably going to be way off.

second, traffic does not mean anything, a site with 10,000 unique hits a day can make more money then a site with 100,000 unique hits a day. Where your traffic comes from is more important then how much you get.

third, lots of sites who people thought was doing really well, or were "players" have gone down, I have seen lots of them over the last 10 yrs my site has been online.

fourth, who really cares how much someone else is suppose to be making, or how much traffic they have or what ever, chances are your wrong about everything you assume so there is no sense is trying to make something of nothing.
