Don't laugh at me but Melissa and I rented Bruce Almighty on cable a few weeks ago and thought that was hillarious!

I'll have to think of something creative for a year end special, too.....

This is what I always hate when hosting prices change.
Everyone offers new customers better pricing than their existing customers get.

Not picking on you Brad, you know I like you, but alot of hosts do this and it just doesn't seem fair that new customers get something better than customers who have been loyal.

It's because they are mostly "resellers"

Well, it's a delicate balance. If you were to speak with most of my long term customers you would find that over time every one of them has been given increases in their bandwidth allowance or decreases in their monthly rate. I've always done this pro-actively and based on my observance of how every hosting competitor operates this is something that others don't do unless asked. I'm not omnicient, I simply make my best effort, but 8 times out of 10 it's been me doing this over the years moreso than clients requesting changes... and I think that's admirable.

Another thing to consider is that for most of our customer accounts that fall into medium and larger spends they predominately receive free hardware upgrades and for some free additional servers when their business grows and needs it.

If we're known for anything, it's really for taking care of our established customer base. I'm not all-knowing, but we really do make some extraordinary efforts to upgrade and assist our clients while they are growing their business.

From a business perspective running specials is quite a common practice in every industry. It's actually new to me, in large part a marketing experiment. We have always just sold at a good every day price. The goal is always to generate new business and sales and find incremental gains. The specials I've offered are available to established customers that want to add on to what they're doing so it's not at all like they're out of reach.

The more new business we bring on whether it is through specials or every day pricing, the greater our ability to continue passing discounts and extra value back to our customers which is something we have a rich history of doing. Even two of the posters in this thread recently received free add-ons to their accounts, one got 100 megabit added to their allowance and another received 50 and neither asked me for it - they just got a surprise email.

That would definitely be more of a custom offering that we would need to simply discuss the details on and then have me create our best price for you. Whether or not I'm running a special, that's what I always do.

Off hand, I would say that the capital expense for what you're seeking is significantly higher in all respects - hardware cost, datacenter space and power usage. Additionally, unlike what's listed above, this is a custom server build and something that I simply don't have sitting in the racks since I recently sold through a half dozen 5TB arrays.

Email, call or ICQ me and we can work towards making our best offer for that!

Brad

A lot of hosts that we compete against are simply resellers of other hosting companies and that would be why much of what they buy and sell at are more or less locked in. As I believe you already know, we're not resellers of anything. It's our cage, our servers, our network equipment, our direct network relationships, etc.

The other reason hosts don't often discount for established customers is quite obvious - discounts are a direct write down to their bottom line. Right or wrong, we can all agree that writing down established business is a direct decrease to bottom line profit and isn't easy for most businesses. I've always done write-downs or giving away more bandwidth a little at a time, consistently, and found that karma usually makes up for the loss in newfound additional sales.

No, they do not. We optionally offer DirectAdmin or cPanel but for fully managed servers don't recommend either (especially cPanel). We aim to please though so at the end of the day it's what you decide is the best fit for your business.

I'll confirm that. Got an email one day telling me my bandwidth allowance had been (roughly) doubled, for no extra charge. Was nice, and I've never even come close to hitting the new cap.

I don't mind the "new service only" specials not being aimed at me, because I think my existing service is pretty damned special!

We've always done lots of SEO hosting and had a lot of IP space. Whether you need a few dozen, hundred or thousand I can accomodate you. We also have direct peering rwith Google and Yahoo right inside of this datacenter. Not sure if it helps but it certainly can't hurt that our networks are directly connected.

We have been with Brad way back with it was SinHost. I can say Brad has helped our business grow in tremendous ways. I also have got those emails where he has given me discounts, free bandwidth etc. We were in a contract with a really shitty host overt 4 years ago and he hosted us for free for a couple months to help us out. He is not here to bend his customers over by any means lol.

Good answer.

FWIW it's not just hosting companies that do this, it pisses me off when cell phone companies or the cable company or whomever offers a new customer a deal for 30% less or more than what I'm paying, and when you call them up to try and get the same deal they tell you it's for new business only.

And since cell phone companies screw you with the contract termination fees and cable companies pretty much run a monopoly you pretty much have to bend over and take it.

I'm leary with the percentile charging, from my old HE.net days. Do you have any pricing based on GB/mo ?

Hi Stoned I just went through my email and if you sent one it might have been filtered. Could you send me an ICQ as well so I can follow up later for sure when I get into the office?

Thanks!

Brad

Let's discuss it some more today on the phone, email or icq. I'm not completely opposed to giving per GB pricing, the metric just has to make sense for us. I would say that with megabit pricing you're always going to get your best rate there since it's a direct tie-back to a host's bandwidth cost with a carrier. However, I'm confident enough in the numbers that I'll sell on gigabytes but it's just going to need to be enough volume to make it worthwhile for us.

I like what im seeing but I don't need a dedicated box just yet.... not big enough.. however if you have any virtual offerings, hit me up and let's discuss.... i'm paying $60 a month for my virtual... only because my uptime has been awesome and it needs to stay that way...

I am sorry that we are not able to help you with virtual hosting, it's a platform that we stopped selling onto a couple of years back. I wish you the best of luck finding a good provider for that. I would recommend NakedHosting for virtual as well as PhatServers and Webair.
