I agree with you Snake! It's about time I see what I'm looking for.

Snake, please tell me who you host with that gives 24/7 unlimited support / phone support. I have been trying to find one for a while.
The last host I was with got pissed when I was on the phone over 4 hours with them when I messed up my web server configuration! Can you believe that!!! I was paying them a good $500 per month and they said that by 12 hours of phone support per month was not covering their costs!!!
I mean WTF!!!
I agree with you Snake.... These companies should be "begging" for our business. Please refer the hosting companies that you use so I can start using them.
Screw these web hosting companies that have restrictions! I want 100% uptime and 100% support!!!

Sure, plenty say they do. Just like the whole "24/7/365 support" thing. With most hosts, that means the ticket system takes tickets all the time and someone looks at them here and there at night, or that someone is close to the phone and checks the messages once an hour or something.

They might say they do. But sooner or later, limits are set and/or a customer is helped to the door. Might just be a matter of a large price increase, setting a new policy against running a certain kind of software, frequent "outages" that only effect that customer, etc. Or simply telling them to get out. I have hosted people on my boxes as a shared host before and I make it very clear that there is no support for customer applications. And if they start messaging me, I say "Look, you need to find someone who has the time for it. I simply don't have time to provide support to someone for $10 a month."

Many hosts lead the customer to the impression that hand holding is there and the customer doesn't find out until after they are in a contract. This guy is up front with it and all people do is flame him for it.
Once again you are speaking out of your ass. Have you been with every hosting company? Have you tried every single hosting company's support?

Our phone system can be called 24/7/365 and we have people on site to anserw calls. I do not care if its 9am or 2 in the morning someone will always be here to take a call. We have never kicked anyone out of our data center for putting to much a load on our services and when we say unlimited manage we do it. If you know anything about windows or linux and a customer needs something done its a pretty simple process. Also regarding the ticket note, tickets sometimes take a little longer to respond to depending on what the customer is asking for generally because our staff will get working on it right away but anyone can get an immediate response by contacting the 24/7/365 phone number listed on just about any real hosting company's website.

BTW, BUMP for a good deal.

Sorry about entering the thread, got no beef with you guys just minusonebit

You're an idiot, and obviously have some sort of vested interest in adultbandwidth's deal here.

The point I was making more than anything is that nobody is going to think it's a good deal if they have 8 thousand details shoved down their fucking throat.
If someone is abusing the support system then you deal with that on a case by case basis. The second you tell me I get "X minutes" of support per month and after that I get charged extra, is the second I tell you to go fuck yourself I'll find another host.

And FWIW, if you've seen the hosting specials being offered lately, hosting companies are "begging" for our business.
But you just sit there and keep telling your potential future customers how you think it should be, I'm sure they are more concerned with your business than they are with their own.

As for me, it's 3AM and I think I'll turn in a support ticket right now for a new MYSQL database. It'll be done within 10 minutes for no extra charge, because I use a "real host".

What the hell is your problem dirtbag!

I'm agreeing that if someone says 24/7 support that they should support you no matter what! You rub one out too hard and did it hurt your head (both of them)?

I agree with you that hosting companies are "begging" for business. Deals are getting better and better all of the time.

Now I have to figure out why you were an ass to me....

You have some anger managment issues, and you are a complete dumb-ass.

I was paying $500 a damn month and after 12 damn hours I was cut off!!! You think that these level 1 support people are worth more than $40 per hour!
If you think a level one phone support person is worth more than $40 per hour then you are an idiot.......

When I'm paying $500 per month I expect to get support.

Once again here you go....

Are you paying $500/month for support alone or servers/bandwidth included.

My experience with customers over the years still holds true, and I think its the same for everyone else.
The ones that pay the least expect the most.

You really are a troll aren't you....

There are two reason why I just figured you are an ass.
1) You are a Dolphins fan.
2) After years (that you say) you have been in the business you still do not know the one line command to create a database.

I'm asking for your hosting recommondations and you are just too stupid to say even one. All you do is bash everyone and you can't say shit but bash people. I was even on your side butt-head!

Are you a child? Go back to your mom's room and cuddle up with her.

I'm not expecting the most at all!
$500 ($495 actually) for 20 Mbps with server. That is not unreasonable at all to expect that with support. It's just been hard to find that with great support that is 24/7.
That's the main reason why I'm looking at GFY. But Snake is being a little bitch and does nothing but bash people instead of saying who he uses. I can see who his lame blog is hosted by (techiemedia), I guess this is the big secret that he wants to hide.

Whatever.....

Let see.
rack space - $50/month
server cost - $80/month
bandwidth cost - $19/Mbps x 20Mbps = $380
Total: $510
payment left for support -$10
4 hours on the phone: $160
I say you owe them at least $150

Rack space I will give you if the location is a equinix-grade place (I doubt this is).
Are you saying these hosting providers are paying $19 per Mbps.... I hardly doubt so!
Are you saying a server cost them $80 per month forever! F No.
Are you saying that an hour of support cost them $40 per hour! F No.

Why are you hounding me here? $500 for 20 Mbps is average pricing. But I am just looking for someone with better support.

Consider energy cost, location, cooling and $50 is an acceptable price
if you're not hosting the server in your garage.
Quote:

If they use low cost providers probably not, but I'm talking about a combination of good and cheap providers and you'll average around $19
unless you use an insane amount of bandwidth talking 10gigs and up here
Quote:

There are other costs than the initial hardware, like replacement parts, hardware maintenance...
Quote:

You're right, Fuck no, with $40/hour you will get a well trained monkey.
If you want a real sysadmin you have to go from $80 and up.

Quote:

Sure its average pricing but I think no host will spend 4 hours with you on the phone. Actually you have nothing to discuss on the phone other than make
them aware of the problem and let them fix it, they're not there to hold you
hand why you're trying to "fix" things.
Also the average pricing comes from the fact that most of the customers won't use anything close to what they've bought thats why it appears cheaper.

$40 per hour is $100k per year. I think you can get a qualified sys admin (not senior) for about $75k per year. At least good enough to to handle an apache conf file.

I asked the support guy to explain the virtual hosts with apache and then fix what was wrong. Would it be better to have them fix it everytime? Faster if I do it myself.
Just like creating a database now, I know how to do this. I don't have to open a ticket like Snake does anymore.

Very true. I'm at 20 Mbps capped and my 95% is only at about 14.7 Mbps. Which makes it even more profitable for them. Which is why I would think for $500 I should get great support.

I bet he would've been good enough if he didn't have to tutor you for 4h.

A tech is not a teacher. He's not supposed to teach you anything. If you want
to learn theres plenty of info on the net that you can use.
Just read a tutorial and you're set.
I think you should be thankful he had the patience to listen to you for 4h.
Any other tech would've pointed you to a tutorial and tell you to fuck off.

You're actually the worst type of customer. Good customers take care of what they know best and don't play the wannabe sysadmin which causes more bad than good as more than often you will break things and they'll have to fix them for you.

Anyway, this is getting offhand, do what you want. I was just trying to point
that you're not as profitable to them as you think and nobody will offer you the level of support you want at this price.
You can be realistic with yourself and try to work it out or go with the next host that will promise you the moon and fool yourself again.

I said many hosts shit for brains, not all hosts. And it is a common practice. Just read WHT for a couple of hours and you'll see just how common it is. Maybe not at yours and maybe not at mine... but it is out there. You have the reading comprehension of a pile of rotten pine needles in a compost pile. When did Split Infinity start hiring stupid people like you?

Ok, I thank you for your opinion. What would one think to pay to have more support (for what I want)? Or is what I'm looking for is hiring someone part time to take care of this stuff for me?

Your opinion does seem to be in pretty big conflict with others in GFY though. Some of these people are claiming that they get bandwidth for free and get unlimited support anytime day / night. Snake keeps saying his hosting provider will do anything within a few minutes 24/7/365. Are you saying that hosters like this are not really 24/7 without a much higher price tag?

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier today. I'd be glad to arrange a tour. Please use the contact us link on our site and we'll schedule an office visit and a tour for you. I have a few hours tomorrow (Wednesday) that would work for me.

For the record, I spent a few hours with Jim and pr0 this afternoon -- nice guys! I'm sure they'll post to this thread when they get a chance.

Russ it was a pleasure meeting you today and seeing your operation. For the record people I went to meet these guys because I was getting the gut feeling that they were not for real, and were some smalltime over committed reseller and basically I was prepared to "oust" them for just that. Well I have to tell all of you that was not the case. These guys have a very nice operation, office, and data centers. Yes it is true that they are taking a loss on some of the deals they are offering right now, but hey we have all done the same thing to break into a new market. I have nothing negative to say about Russ or his operation and in fact I can see TechieMedia and them doing some future business together.

It was also GREAT to see my good friend pr0 again, and I will not comment for him as I am sure he will chime in and add his 2cents regarding our meeting. OK now I must pack before the Mrs. beats my ass as we are leaving for Vacation in Disney in the morning.

Peace Out

Jim

Jim, thanks. Great 2500th post . I appreciate your comments and confirming that we are in fact "real." It was a pleasure meeting you and I'm sure we'll be able to do some business in the future. For the record, I was also impressed with what you've told me about TechieMedia and your client list. It certainly sounds as though your clients are in good hands.

Once again, nice meeting you, and have a great time in Disney World!

Was a pleasure meeting you Russ.

Office had several employees working 6+ minimum that i saw, not including a smoking hot receptionist. Checked out one of the data centers....theres definitely several servers/racks/routers & clients hosted.

Russ overall seemed like he knew what he was talking about (at least was able to keep up with jim).

To summarize.... i would have to say this is probably a completely legitimate operation. And Russ seems like a nice/articulate businessman just trying to break into a new market. Couldn't read any bullshit from his words/eyes...& he doesn't exactly fit the profile of a poker player, so i think he's good to go.

Great seeing you as always Jim, look forward to the pool parties this summer

Yes later today (Wednesday) is fine. I split my time between LA and DC and I will be out of the DC region for the next few weeks starting this weekend. I wouldn't mind meeting up in your office and then seeing your space in Equinix and S&D (don't feel like seeing your 1275K if that is OK with you).

He also needs to learn meetings in this business are held in strip clubs, not 10x10 conference rooms with white boards.

But hey, thats a typical rookie mistake.

I'm glad to meet new people in the area and show them around our facilities. I'm looking forward to meeting you soon. As far as pricing, this promotion is already heavily discounted. Regardless, we'll talk more about pricing later.

Russ,

It was great meeting you the other day. It was also very interesting to see your data facilities and how great it was to see the size of your company and your redundancy at your hosting facilities.
Also THANKS for giving me that 10% discount!
It also felt great to see that Inforelay has the TopLayer IDS / IPS 5500/1000 devices to fight DDOS attacks. I'm not getting that protection right now but it is nice to know that it is possible.

Just so everyone knows Russ gave me a 10% off on the offer me mentioned in this posting since I paid a year upfront. Great for me since I'm putting it all on this year's expenses.

And... just to correct the other guys (obivously competitors) on this thread that said he was a one man shop....
When I walked into the office there was an office administrator at the front desk and I counted at a minimum 8 other employees other than Russ (couldn't really tell since they are actually busy and dealing with stuff and some were walking around).

At the Ashburn facility they had a cage of 5 racks (maybe 4) which is all mainly their routers, switches, and some systems. These were non-locking cabs so obviously only Inforelay staff had access to this.
They also had many many (well over 20 racks) in the Equinix "shared" cages. These are cages that are locking cabs that employees can obviously get 24/7 access to.
Equnix ashburn is a hell of a facility by the way! Free hot chocolate!

Their S&D Reston facility was also impressive and Inforelay is BY FAR the largest "reseller" in that place. There was a couple of companies that had more space but they were primarily government clients or large corporations. Of resellers Inforelay is the largest by far in S&D. They had over 10 locking cabs and then another 14 that were non-locking in cages.

Another interesting thing that I found out (when I was talking to other guys in the lobby when Russ had to take a phone) is that Inforelay is the ONLY reseller in S&D Reston that actually has redundant connections (I think one to Equinix Ashburn and then to a direct data provider in that facility). All of the other resellers in that place are working off a single connection to Ashburn Equinix. In fact they all share the "same" fiber strand to Equinix Ashburn. So there is Inforelay / Russ and then everyone else. So I would consider all of the rest of them "poo-poo".

I'm sorry to say But my company is in this building as well and we total 15 racks of space, we Also have redundant connections from various other people in this building as well, we don't own the fiber but we are redundant with other providers who have their own fiber into this building.

Not sure who you talked to but pretty sure PTP has a redundant pair as well going back to ashburn Equinix.

And i'm pretty sure inforelay does not own 100% of that fiber they split it with a company calle davi who also controls fiber to other datacenters in the region.

Spudstr, that is very interesting and I apologize if I am wrong.
Regarding number of racks it does not matter really. But in "size" Inforelay still seems a lot larger than you since they had more than 15 (but that does not really matter). How many employees do you have? Would you mind a visit to your office as well? I am looking for someone that has a good precense in this area all of the time.

Regarding the fiber connects.....
I was told the other company (PTP if that is what their name is) does NOT have a redundant loop and I actually saw their cage (I believe it is in the first bay as you walk in). Now I did see only two fiber drops there.... So what connection do you have to this provider (PTP)? Do you have one of those FE connections or do you have one of those fibers? I'm not sure if I would be interested in a provider with only one FE connection.
So either they are single connected to Ashburn with one fiber drop and you have the other.
Or they do have redundant fiber connects to Asburn and you only have a FE connection.
Please explain what you have. Don't BS me Spudstr, I will have a access card and I will be back there in a couple weeks. I don't mind verifying everything that you have there and reporting back to GFY.

Maybe when I'll be back in the next couple of weeks I can tour your office and you can show me what you have in S&D Reston. Where is your office located? Inforelay's felt closer to Ashburn Equinix but they said their techs are either in the facilities or can get to the facilities pretty quickly.

Russ took me out to Champs, so if you want to upstage that please feel free!

Regarding the fiber to Inforelay. Russ was very up-front with Inforelay's connections. He said they are splitting the "dark fiber" with a sole bandwidth provider (did not mention the name though). But this bandwidth provider is "not" a shared or colocation company reseller. Is this wrong?

So my original post is still correct. All of the other resellers are still going through this other provider (PTP as you say) and Russ (and this other company) have another fiber run to Ashburn. So for clients like us there is Inforelay and all of the rest.

PLEASE correct me with anything that I am stating wrong and I look forward to a meeting in the next couple of weeks.
I did just sign up for some stuff with Inforelay but I can always use other providers that have excellent support and great services.

PTP has dual pairs of fiber, one is not lit the other is, We have a 10GE connection to PTP, not an FE, and we have a single gigE going to cogent and within 2008 will be upgrading to a 10GE with them as well, so currently 11Gbps total and thats our network. Weather PTP has yet to run their second pair from the MMC from abovenet that is their decision.

If we were still in Ashburn at equinix we would be direct instead of going through PTP, I have know the owner of PTP for a few years and I knew him when we were both at MCI/UUnet since Brian was head of the router security team for UUnet I trust him and his network and have no problems buying transit from his company he engineers his traffic well with his 5 tier 1 providers and we get great speeds to our customers at all points of the world. We provide managed services and this is what we do and we let Brian and his team manage their network since thats what they do best and it is their business and mine is do manage the clusters we have.

As far as my company and my staff we have no central office and I have part time employees that work for me. You would be surprised at companies that have no central office, would you believe me if I told you that Nlayer's network does 100Gbps of transit across their network and they have no central office? Me and my team work great since we all live in the area.

As far as splitting the fiber with another company they split the fiber with Avi who holds rights to provide/sell transport to other people from ashburn. they do this to s&d vienna/tysons/tyco road as well and I think they might even do it to 365main in chantilly. None the less its a single 10GE wave just like what PTP does, only difference is PTP can utilize the entire 10GE to themselfs. Reston isn't very large and is pretty much out of space, more like out of power and cooling for larger circuits.

Unless Inforelay bought that top layer device from Steve/Tiggee that device is not inforelays but might have use to it if its the one in Reston and that model only supports 500Mbps. How do I know this? a good friend of mine who is also a customer of PTP's sold this device to Steve/tiggee.

Feel free to contact me on ICQ and i'd be happy to show you our setup in Reston. As far as upstaging Russ for food Champs is the popular watering hole around here I meet with a few customers there since its literary a block a way. Though if you like chineese/thai Bigbowl across the street on the parkway is much better than champs.

I'm always up for meeting with people local to the area. Regardless you can contact me at zak at yellowfiber dot net or via ICQ.

Spudstr,

The TopLayer 5500/1000 does do a gigabit. This is what I saw, do not say that I did not see it.
That is a $80k device... you can call them yourself.

The Toplayer 5500/500 does 500 Mbps.... There is also a 5500/100 that does 100 Mbps.

So how many full time employees do you have? Is it enough to provide 24/7 coverage? I went to your website and it looks like you are based in West Virginia, is that where you are located?

Spudstr,

You first said that PTP had this redundant loop and now you are saying that they do not.
Now you are stating that you have a 10 GE connection through PTP to ashburn, but unless PTP is using NONE of that fiber that is impossible. Are you saying that you are PTP's only customer? Why wouldn't you just get your own dark fiber?

Well i'm telling you the unit Tom sold Tiggee was the 500Mbps model.

And no no longer in WV, now in Reston VA, in the town center to be exact. As far as 24/7 coverage we monitor the network and have emergency contact for customers incase or problems. we also monitor every server 24/7 and pages are sent out to a number of problem. We do not state we provide 24/7 tech support anywhere on our site.

If you want an exact break down sure, I personally live in the town center 4 minutes across the reston park way, Alex lives in fairfax station ~15 mins away, greg lives down in ashburn ~10 minutes away down the toll road and Jimmy lives out in manassas.

Anything else you would like to know about me and my company? We host some reputable people on this forum and have had zero problems with their support or services.

Yup, we have a 10GE connection to PTP's switch there in reston, they do have a 10GE line back to ashburn, we occupy about 900-1100Mbps of his 10GE circuit and his other customers do however much they do.

I would venture to invest in my own dark fiber to ashburn however Abovenet/MFN no longer sells dark fiber + the space/power/cooling moratorium placed in switch & data reston has everying at a stall (15-20 racks more left in this building) so why spend the 10k/month + the 20k install for fiber and not be able to expand? If i wanted 3 paths back/out of the building I could do it but its not needed. Northern virginia is stuck on power and is a rather large problem.
