How to license a complete content collection?
People who read my sig, or my constant spamming (it's a union thing-- content providers are require by bylaw to do it), know that I sell content. Specifically, I license individual sets, all at the same price.
I have been thinking of making it clear that I could offer a more universal deal, as well. How would you frame this, and what would you charge/pay based on the normal price per set, and the number of sets? Would it make sense to include future work? How? (Set number of future sets, one year of work, something else...) Any thoughts? Anyone out there doing this in a way that would serve as a lesson? Some basic facts: - I have about 75 sets - Sets are about 100 softcore images - Base price is $90 / set - I generally produce a dozen new sets a month

The only way I buy content is to swoop through and buy everything. Why don't you put an everything price on your site. Big programs would rather pick up all the goth content at once then nickel and dime in it, I think.
The only thing about selling like this is that people like me expect to pay merely a fraction of your regular asking price because we know that the average sale is less than a few hundred dollars and that sales of more than a thousand dollars are few and far between Other ways... spend XXX get xx% off, etc, etc Or you could create a club... one low price gets all your updates every month... Or you could create a plug-in and lease it... Or you could make CDs of 4-5 photoshoots each. Just my Brad

We got over 600 sets, adding 20 a week.
All shot by professional porno photographers. Solo, 450+ Two girl 40+ Boy girl 120+ Average price $35, so somewhere around $21,000+ Would take $10,000 for it in a one off order. As for future sales, anyone buying all sets released. Would get every fourth 20 free = 25% discount. I know there are others out there that would give it away, but I guess it's on a need basis. Our stuff sells well and do not need to give it away. |

Based on Paul's example of charging about 50% for all of the content, I have come up with the following. Note that we have 75 sets available now, growing at about a dozen a month. Also note that each set sells at most 4 times.
Single photo set - $90 Thirteen sets - $1000 - $76.92 each, save ~15% Thirty sets up - $70 each, save ~22% All (75) sets - $3500 - $46 each, save ~50% (Since we also have discounts for linkback and photographer credit, this means our lowest price would now be $39.67 per set, or about 40¢ per image.) So, here's the question... Is the "Everything" price reasonable? Is the overall structure too complicated, if I add this everything price?

The content is top notch, no doubt. Unfortunately, you'd have to be in the .10-.20/image range for me to take everything. That's just the value that I assess to photos, no matter how good. I've already got 100k images so evidently quite a few content sellers see things the way I do.
If you hold on to your content too tight, you're missing out on money. Don't look at the discount as money lost, look at what's left over as money you NEVER would have gotten. As an exercise, put things in perspective. You're saying that you want $3500 for all 75 photosets. Your stuff is nice and niche but the reality is that the nicest stuff out there generally goes for .50 or less. Just ask yourself what $1500 or $2000 would do for you if that was what you got for a sale. Quit being the artist that is holding on to his precious wares, become the wheeler-dealer that says 'HEY! If I get $1500 from Brad I can do another 15 photo shoots!!' Ultimately, the sets as a whole are worth what you can get for them. There will be people that place different values on the whole collection. Personally, I know lots of companies like me that buy everything at once for half or more off. The problem that I have here is your content is two times what I value it at to begin with so half off is like paying retail in my mind. lol Again, just my ...Don't misunderstand me, it's hott stuff! Those creamy white girls of yours are totally spankable.Brad

Sorry Brad I have to disagree with you. the problem is if you discount too much you lose a lot of clients who will buy at the right price. I think it depends on how well you sell and what you need.
Our prices are competetive to start with a boy girl set @ 35 cents an image or a two girl sex set @ 25 cents or a solo teen, vibrator set @ 20 cents an image.Or how about the biggest tits in the world @ 53 cents an image. The thing is, does it bring in more money to go for quantity, quality or both? All good selling sets. But if you are prepared to buy $10,000 worth I'm prepared to give you 100% extra for free. But as the site grows I do not think the discount will. 50% is as far as we need to go. If the content provider you are buying from is taking your offer he is takeing every one elses, so exclusive is not important? Gothweb You know what it costs to produce, you will soon find out what it sells like. Only take the offers of $10,000 if you need to. Otherwise leave these to the content providers who need the money. |

So, how much should I charge for semi-exclusive softcore niche content? I am still new to this, so am trying to find the price that is fair but keeps me firmly in the "premium" range. I don't pretend to be a marketing expert, so I am always open to feedback.

Take all the costs, models, studios, equipment, insurance, transport, feeding models, heating, admin, computers, Internet access, plus EVERYTHING else. Devide the money by the number of sets you shoot a "Year". You now have a cost per set. Double it and ask can you live off that? If the answer is yes there is your price per set, charge more or shoot more. Now the problem is the marketing to get the sales. You just saw how I did it, as an example of what my clients get for the price they pay. In the begginning offers from people like Brad will seem tempting, fortunately for us we did not need the money. |

also when you sell all of it you need to think about what kind of license you will give them. you should be able to sell the content a lot cheaper if you lets say, only allowed the content to be in the member area. then you wont have to worry about your content being played out like most of the stuff out there is.

Paul, your advice is very helpful. I think seeing the webmaster side from people like Brad, along with your side of things, will be a great help in putting it all together.
One way I would like to look at this is the other direction. I just wish I could find comparable providers to compare my stuff to... but there isn't a lot of semi-exclusive softcore goth out there, at least that I have found. In the meantime... Time to break out Excel.

I like this way of doing business. Got a 10 CD set ready to ship out when the post office opens. I like working in volume. Thanks everyone for the advice.
Oh, and from now on... Mention GFY and get 10% off.

plugin might be easier and more profitable possibly.
There are no goth plugins that i am aware of, certainly nothing very impressive.

A plugin is a little too large an undertaking for a little fish like me, at this point. I agree it would be great to see one.
