Win XP out performs Vista

I am not upgrading until Vista can outperform XP.

It is sad that Microsoft is putting deadlines on computer makers to install Vista on their machines.

Show me a website that uses png and I'll check.

I've been pretty satisfied with Vista. Sure some fatal errors pop up now and then, but everyone program I've installed runs smoothly.

Did any content producers here donate to the Vista integrated DRM fund?

DRM security flaws initiated in 3... 2... 1...

You don't make a secure OS by adding in pointless 'features'. That's just more avenues for exploitation.

I'll probably only upgrade to Vista once XP updates officially cease. I'm not really that keen on buying new versions of some of my expensive software that work properly with it, or finding that my older hw has no vista driver.

Biggest dis I've heard about Vista is it immediately allocates all of your system memory for itself and then dishes it out to other applications as they need it. For people like many of us who encode and edit videos, that sucks, because instead of needing two gigs of RAM, we need four.

It sucks for developers, too, because it limits what they can write to the registry and what they can write to the Program Files folders for the apps. These are not insurmountable obstacles; developers just have to learn a new way of coding. Doesn't mean they don't bitch about it, though.

As for me, I'm sticking with XP pro on my workstation where I edit and encode. I did have to buy a Vista box when I set up a workstation for Webcams. It seems to work okay. Still. I'm hoping it will go the way of Windows ME. Who remembers that certified POS?

1) Actually it wasn't a secret from the beginning. I was always telling the ppl: "never use Vista if you want you PC work fast".
2) Vista will never outperform XP because of DRM and other shit. Furthermore it will never run at least as far as XP does (course if m$ won't issue a special SP to slowdown XP).

Vista came with this laptop and I wont take it off......

but I have upgraded a few desktops before and it never seemed to work well on them, even on well speced machines.

Maybe its the upgrade that is the issue.

32bit stay with XP... 64bit go to Vista... if you are a gamer !

Vista is very stable, however you need a dual core system. Most of the test are using Intel systems and not AMD... Try running XP 32bit on a 64bit system... You can install it, however there are issues... then you say well why not get XP 64bit... right??? ... well XP 64bit is actually a modified MS 2003 server and will not run much of anything... and there are driver issues... So then you say if you are a gamer lets try vista... Now Vista 64bit is far from perfect, however it is hell of a lot more stable then XP... there are some XP video games that will not run and there is not the driver support as of yet, however the alternative is using linux/gui and if you are a gamer such is out of the question !

Later,

.

Stability of Vista and XP doesn't is not relate to number of CPU cores (1,2,4 etc).

There are no issues. Both 64bit CPU's (I mean Intel and AMD ones) have 100% support of 32bit and 16bit instruction sets.

Yes, WinXP64 is a modified version of one of the most stable m$ products - Win2003. As about the drivers. It was an issue 2 years ago, but now personally I can't see any problems with that. I have XP64 on my PC (Core2 Duo E6550) and it equipped with the drivers for EVERYTHING I need.

Wrong. Vista64 has the same problems as Vista32 - it works VERY slow and it has serious issues with the "older software". Win64 has no such a problem - it's as fast and as stable as XP32. The only difference - it allows one to run native PE64 executables.

Try buying a Mac with their previous OS on it. Good luck! and its been out for what a month?
Of the 5 people that I know with macs that upgraded, 4 of them went back to the old version after just a couple days with the new OS.

You mean Vista runs faster on some specific hardware then other.
Macs have it easy, they right one set of drivers, because they control what hardware people use, Try putting a different video card into a mac and see how well it works.
Windows makes an OS thats supposed to work on an almost unlimited amount of different configurations of hardware.

Congratulations on proving you have no idea what RAM is or what its used for.
Yes Vista will allocate every last bit of ram not being used. Why wouldnt it? RAM that is sitting un used is wasted ram, might as well put it to use.
The good thing abotu vista is it actually knows how to properly allocate RAM usage unlike XP.
When you render video Vista will give up all the ram the rendering program can use. And of course editors are using 4gb instead of 2 now, why wouldnt they, vista can actually use 4gb unlike XP. 4gb will run slower then 2gb in a vista system.

Zero complaints.

Here we go again. We have had this thread 10 times now. 90% of the people who claim Vista sucks are pathetic dumb sheep who havent even tried it! Then 5% who have tried and have no clue how to configure an OS (yes, Vista sucks out of the box) and then the final 5% who truly have problems. Could be anything. Hardware, software etc. XP users also have this as any other OS.

I installed Vista on a new computer now 6 months ago or so and it is BY FAR the best OS i ever tried. Even if you paid me i wouldnt go back to XP. XP sure is good but Vista if way better IF YOU KNOW WHAT THE FUCK YOU ARE DOING which obviously most of you imbeciles don't know.

It's more stable, faster, everything runs smooth plus it also looks way nicer which is a nice extra.

You people are fucking sheep! I sure that most of you idiots havent fucking even tried it.

And yeah there is no point in installing it on an old computer obviously. And yeah it needs quite some tweaking the first days. But after that if you can honestly claim it sucks then either your computer suck or you suck because you can't configure it.

Anyway, typical gfy behaviour. Fucking no clue parrots.

Did someone tell you that or did you notice it yourself? Where do you get that information from?

Very slow??? It runs fast as hell. I never had an OS boot up this fast and in general work this fast. And what programs are you talking about exactly? In 6 months i maybe had 1 or 2 or maybe even 0 programs which didnt work because of Vista. I cant even recall one but it *might* be possible.

Wrong. Vista and XP have the same limits of memory utilization:
1) WinXP 32 bit and Vista 32 bit both are unable to use 4Gb
1) WinXP 64 bit and Vista 64 bit both are able to use over 4Gb

Both.
1) I was testing Vista on the same PC where I have XP installed (Core 2 Duo/2Gb RAM).
2) Course I'm also getting the info from the other sources as well. The ZNet article mentioned above is one of those sources.

1) According to my personal feeling - yes, it's very slow.
2) According to ZNet's tests: it works more than 2 times slower than XP (80 seconds instead of 30 seconds on a same test)

Well i can't recreate any of the problems you've had. Once again i think it's all about tweaking it. The way it comes out of the box it just sucks.

no wonder. XP takes less resources.

Funny then... it was a race I performed... I rendered the exact same 3D image on both the XP unit and new vista dual core. The exact same same settings and tweaks. Hit enter and let em rip. Vista blows the doors off XP by maybe 20 seconds, put it this way, maybe a 5 car length finish advantage for vista over XP.

Yes I had headaches at first. look up 50 tweaks for vista - turn on your proccessor to 100% and its a whole new animal.

BUT ---BUT I DO need help unsticking my vista dreamweaver properties box from the bottom of the screen. Otherwise its light years faster than the old workhorse XP.

I felt the same way but once I was forced to make it work, it wasn't that bad.
