Maybe you could just turn the lights off in the rooms you aren't in or something instead of going through all that just to pay more in legal fees.

The best I can say is:

At least that demonstration didn't suggest chopping through the main electric service and using some dumb diversion technique like others I have seen. Good way to get killed.

Course, the world is better off without a few people I can think of. . .

And the electric provider has nothing in place to alert them when suddenly one of their customers bills fall by 50%?

Lot of work. Easier to just put a housing around the meter and put a big assed magnet in it. The only problem is, you had better know when your meter is being read.

I'm missing something here... why goto all that trouble, if the magnets are effecting it in that setup, wouldn't a simple rare earth magnet simply placed near it do the same thing?

yes, if it is a big enough magnet and you place it against the glass. We did that back in the early 70's.

Really? Why is that? Motors more powerful or magnets not as strong?

Did you look at the video? He was doing essentially the same thing, just a lot more work.

Most meters are digital now, and those that still have moving parts are either shielded or made of non-magnetic materials, i.e. aluminum. I suppose if you find a place that has a VERY old meter from the 70s it still could work. But most of the meters have been switched out even on those buildings.

The part you are clueless about is that the electric companies have gone around and wholesale changed out meters just to make them all digital.

Please note: This video does not depict real or true events. The magnets in the video have no effect on the electric meter. This would only be considered illegal if we were tampering with the internal components of the meter. The magnets are nowhere near strong enough to slow the dial, thus it's just as useless as fallen leaves sitting on top. And connecting the magnets to a cup of water? What does this do? Nothing!!! It's bogus. We printed out some paper that looked like bills from an electric company and changed some numbers. Let this be a lesson to the internet.

And what do you tell the hydro company when their inspectors see you tampered with the meter?

As an Electrician I want to say a few words.
One, all the moving internal parts are aluminum, or plastic on any meter made in the last 15+ years. Most new ones are digital and some even report the reading via wireless so they can read the meters just by driving by, gated communities and condo buildings more then others so far.

Two, I find the replies funny as a couple of them say they are electricians but fail to notice that the wire and water are doing nothing a string couldn't.

Three, if the power company caught you trying to tamper with the reading equipment, via internal or external ways they WILL cut your power. I doubt they would think that is doing anything more then looking stupid though.

Four, Meters do get changed, but not normally untill there is a service upgrade in the area, the house has the panel upgraded, or their is a problem with the current one. Although anywhere with a 600+amp service are being upgraded all the time, as the digital meters are much more accurate at those power levels.
Most average homes only have a 100amp service, a 200 amp service would be a very large house, or one with a lot of power needs, and 300/400amp would be for like a mansion. I have never seen larger then 400amp in a single residence.
