GARMIN? Do you own a GPS driving device?

With your experience, what make/model would you buy now. Would you buy the same one you bought? Do you wish you would have gone with another make and/or model? Is there something new you are looking into?

GPS driving - are you happy you bought the device or do you never use it?

I bought both of my kids a Garmin last xmas, they love them. Oh, and I have factory installed in my Charger as goodgirl does in hers. I use it all the time.

Additional fees on the Garmin? Not that either of them have told me.

As far as the factory installed, there are no additional fees, but the data is pre-loaded with a CD/DVD so new streets will not show up. I presume that if I felt the need I could buy a newer version of the CD just like you can buy new versions of a Thomas Guide.

We compared the Garmin to the TomTom and the Garmin was a better value.

The one thing that both kids had an issue with was the mounting of the unit in their vehicles. It comes with suction cup mounting devices for portability but you have to be creative sometimes.

One thing I like about the Garmin over the factory install is that you can put in intersections if you don't have an exact address.

I use garmin on my bike. I can drive in the rain, or snow. She is shock prove and water resistant. 1200 $ for it, MP3, 4 GIG disk in it. Bleutooth and very handy when you connect it with a blackberry. Its like a mobile office, only this time you know where you are. with FM Antenna, so you can avoid nasty obstacles on your way.

I think it cost more because it was made for a bike. Also, I bet he got a nice higher model.

I have a factory one in my SUV and I also have a Garmin for the car. The Garmin is the 2620 and works great so so far. I don't use it much because any long trips i take I use the truck but when i do its alway on the money. No extra fee's but I do wish i got the one with built in blue-tooth for the phone. my buddy has it and it works great.

i use my pocket pc/phone (windows mobile 5 based) + bluetooth gps receiver which costs about 100 euro

the software i use now is "iGO"
have tried destinator and route66 but iGO is much much better

and you can select restaurants, tourism, gas stations.. and search for all nearby things.. and it takes you right to them.

they're touch screen and pretty simple. My farther in law has one and he's 64. he has no problem. if you give them a run through it should be fine.

I have a tomtom and a Garmin, and like them both. The mapping on the Garmin seems to be a bit more precise and include more points of interest. You can get some killer deals right now on either of them.

I have a Magellan.

I avoided it at first because I thought it would be hard to use. Then someone told me it was very simple, and it is. Extremely easy to use.

Really cool if you're in a strange town and want to find the nearest Starbucks or nearest Mexican restaurant or something.

I have one that came with the Cherokee (2006 car - found out the NAV is from 2002....).

Bought a Lowrance iWay 500C about 18 months ago. Hated it and ended up giving it to my Dad.

Went to Europe and rented a Garmin with the car - LOVED IT - came back and bought one - Garmin StreetPilot c340. It's the in Wrangler and it's awesome. I like it a lot better than the one in the Cherokee.

I use a HP PDA which has GPS/wifi and TomTom bundled, that way it's a standard navigator in the car but it can also do other useful things.

If you have NO idea where you're going then it's probably useful, but the maps will never be 100% accurate or complete (some streets that existed for a year before I bought the device don't exist in my version, and near to home it thinks a closed off road is a T intersection). Most trips of any distance involve one or two freeways nearby so I usually ignore its bleating until I'm closer to the destination.

One annoying quirk of the tomtom software is that if it thinks you're off the road (eg set back on a long driveway) it will stop giving you routing instructions and just indicate that you should move to the road. This by itself isn't a problem, but once I start venturing further out into rural areas the line of the road on the map doesn't seem to match where I'm actually driving, which means it could stop giving directions for several minutes at a time. I was once driving west for about 15 minutes "off the road" (according to the nav) when I should have actually been going north.

Nuvi is badass... I also had a C320 but the NUVI is just so much better that I gave the C320 to my in-laws.

I've been really happy with my TomTom. Like Rowan, I've had some issues with rural areas.

The most current was this past weekend, downtown Philadelphia. I was in the middle of turning when the GPS would tell me another direction. Really narrow streets, and a dense skyline seem to affect it negatively.

I had a Destinator ND for a short time and it totally shitted me up the wall. It would say things like "turn right... (pause)... 3 kilometres ahead." It also directed me to do a U-turn on a freeway, or drive through a locked gate into a restricted area of an airport.

There were too many of these little niggly annoyances so I took it back for a refund.
