Yeah I've been. It's cool but don't do like I did and not book any accomodation in advance because you will get ripped off locally. I thought I could do it like Europe and just show up and find a place... well you can but it's a fuck around and you will pay more than you should.

Also, those grubby little Egyptians always have their hands out for money... "Baksheesh!"..."Baksheesh!"

And nothing has a price tag... you have to fucken bargain for everything and I hate that shit.

But besides all that it was an interesting trip and well worth doing... but you could probably see enough of the place in a week.

I have been there, and the views are great, but let me warn you against the locals, and the not so local tourist sharks.. they are insane.. right when you arrive at the area, you´re attacked by these men who wants your money, and they are very very rude.. I have been to alot or other places in the world and never seen such crazy behavior.. But to get back to the Pyramids.. they let 100 people.. and not 1 more into the Great Pyramid pr day!! So it´s almost impossiple to get inside..

Muslim country, I'd stay the hell away.
2 years ago, a whole bunch of German tourists were shot / slaughtered by muslim fundamentalists, I think it was in Luxor.
By some pyramids. Good luck...

My grandparents were just there before the attacks. They visited the pyramids and did all of the fun touristy stuff. They had 2 armed guards with them 24/7. Even with the body guards, they didn't feel totally safe when they were walking around on the streets...and this was BEFORE 9/11. They had a great time, but they did encounter quite a few instances of prejudice. Having said that, I personally would not feel comfortable visiting Egypt in the current political climate, but that's just me. If I were to go, I would probably wait a year or 2 and hire a few body guards to be with me at all times so I would feel a little safer.

I went there 2-3 years ago
It is impressive as you drive and you see these huge piramids from far
but when you actually go there there is nothing to see
after 5 min I was bored
and there is absolutely nothing around except the desert
that day it was like 47 C° - people throwing up from the heat and there is NO place to buy some water or something!!
Egypt is dirty as hell and everybody there wants to sell you stuff
you can easily live like a king with 20$ a day
the average salary is 12$ a month...

Yep.
The skyline leading up the great pyramid road is impressive.
The dessert and the pyramids themselves are spectacular.
The great shaft on the inside is nice.
The rest of the interior...bah...a dramatic let down.

I went a while back.
They do not like Americans/Europeans plenty told me.

Organize your tour before hand state side.

Know all the places you want to go. Even though it may seem a bit dicey, you will want to tour historic mosques--more spectacular than the pyramids IMHO.

Always bring your own chilled bottled water and have plenty of small bills for the locals. Who knows wtf they are saying about you in Arabic if you don't tip them 10 cents...

Do not eat anything outside of your hotel/tour. Get a prescription for these tiny white pills from your doctor for diarerah. Because you will get it, and if you don't have prescription medicinie you will be sorry.

Stay in an American "four-star" chain hotel too =}
Europeans have a different idea about nice accommodations...

That is all I can think of now.

You forgot the other good statistic.

That most accidents happen within 8 miles of your home, or am I wrong on the number? I know its close.

I've been to the pyramid of Las Vegas (luxor) - the first VIP TGP was there and we all saw the blue man group - Awesome show, really worth going to.

As an alternative, I suggest you go to Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

Very impressive ruins, history, exotic locale...

I think as more people learn about Angkor Wat and realize how safe Cambodia has become as a destination, that this will easily surpass Egypt's pyramids on the tourist wish list.

take the 5 star tugboat cruise on nile river for a few days going from the bottom back up to cairo.

stay away from police officers that want to take a picture for you then ask for $$$

stay away from camel rental dudes that look like they'll take you out deep into the desert and wont take you back to the pyramids until you pay them more.$$$

but overall

I've been 5 times.. nice place, people are friendly, cairo is actually very safe despite what you may think, food is fine outside your hotel - just use your head, if a place looks dodgy, don't eat there! Always drink mineral water, watch out for ice in drinks.. actually water in cairo is generally safe but heavily chlorinated so may effect your weak western stomachs.. ;)

There's lots of armed police all over the place mainly due to mubaraks opposition to islamic extremists and the negative impact on tourism that terrorist attacks tend to have.. ;)

Haggle for everything, even taxis! Its part of the fun..

Air polution in cairo is bad.. poverty is rife..

Of course you should also head south to luxor and aswan (get the overnight sleeper train) then take a feluca upriver from aswan to see some of the smaller places.. its cool

You don't need to book anything in advance, just look around and haggle..

Watch the sound & light show at the pyramids from kfc/pizzaland (or whatever its called) - you will understand if you get there.. ;)

Goto the sinai.. go diving, hang out with the bedouin, chill out..

Be prepared to 'slum it' a little.. ;)

Then cross the border to israel (eilat/taba crossing - NOT gaza! ;) and have some fun there..

Don't believe everything you see on cnn..

I've been there. The place would be AWESOME, if all the fuckers there would go away. It's pretty neat and all. The pyramids are definately a sight to see.. I wouldn't stay there for weeks though.

I went to Israeli the same trip, and man, that's the filthiest country of the world (atleast where I've been).. outright nasty.
Not to offend anyone, but it was a bad trip..

My Aunt was in Egypt last year and she didn't enjoy her trip. She said the pyramids were neat but the locals just drove her nuts. Everywhere you go you get swarmed with beggers. They are not subtle beggers either, they are pushy & rude.
Not to mention everything is very dirty and unsafe.
She went for 2 weeks and said after 5 days she wish she was back at home.
If you go there then stay for 1 week, I don't think you need two.

oh yeah, she also mentioned the pyramids are very similar to each other. You see a few and think they are pretty cool, but then they all start looking the same...And the Nile stinks according to her as well.

Yep - Loved it. Been twice. Once in 94, and again last year.

Cairo is a dirty place, and you are constantly bombarded with "Do you want to buy a postcard?"... but overall, a pretty exotic place.

Me and the misses last year.

You're joking right?? Sure you don't mean gaza or ramallah? or perhaps you were a bit confused and actually went to suddan or libya..

Israel is not the filthiest country in the world by a long shot and is probably the most modern country in the middle east.. there are of course some run down areas in the big cities as there are anywhere in the world but to say its 'outright nasty' is offensive... I would hazard a guess and say you had a 'bad trip' for other reasons..

Yes, sorry.. I was confused.. I accidentally confused libya with israeli...
I had a bad trip because the whole fucking country was filled with trash. I started my trip in Jerusalem (libya?) and drove to the red sea through the desert and shit.. not pleasant. But I'm entitled to my opinion, if I spend a few weeks in a place, I get a pretty good picture.

Yes you are but its just plain bizarre in this case..

I live by the red sea, the desert is.. well its kind of empty on account of it being a desert - no people around therefore no trash around.. the only exception would be around the occasional bedouin camp but thats hardly representative..

Jerusalem itself is also hardly representative being as it is the center of a war between israel and the palestinians and having body parts strewn around the streets on a regular basis.

I was there two years ago and the pyramids sure are very impressive.

Just be careful what you eat... especially with their local food. I had something discusting with liver & kidney and it made my stomach sick for three months

Would love to go again though, if only the locals were not such a pain in the ass...

I have been to alot or other places in the world and never seen such crazy behavior.. But to get back to the Pyramids.. they let 100 people.. and not 1 more into the Great Pyramid pr day!! So it´s almost impossiple to get inside..
you should try dealing with the fuckers in downtown seattle.
