WTF is with these comets vs. earth shows on?

I usually just leave the discovery or national geographic channel on for some background noise, but just noticed that within the last 2 days, there has been 3 separate shows on comets smashing into the earth. one now on HD discovery and one on discovery and natgeo yesterday. is there something that i should now about?

George Bush is trying to scare people because he wants to start a war against Asteroids next.

Yeah the odds say its 1 in 5000 that it will happen sometime during this century.

PS. Not only are there less people looking for these objects in they ski than what is stationed during a typical McD's shift, assuming we did find one we have no fucking workable plan to divert it in the works. Oh and before anyone says it or thinks all hollywood, no we can not just blow it up or nuke it.

well the show last night says there are two options that are being developed.

one is a asteroid tug boat, that clamps onto the asteroid/comet and moves it slightly off course

the other is a light reflector, that acts like a big magnifying glass and burns up the asteroid like a magnifying glass on an ant colony, as well as the energy exerted would push the asteroid slightly off course.

seriously, i feel less safe with these two ideas then i would with none

i think the reason is...with 1:5000 odds, if my number did hit, i'd shut the fuck up and take it like a man.

Why in the hell take a hit when it is preventable. Hell thats akin to waiting in the aluminum bleacher stands during a thunderstorm watching a golf game. Shit is preventable, get off your ass and do not get struck.

2012...the time is coming

jk
it would be good to have battering rams as well

huge rocket platforms that nudge up against the main structure then fire rockets non stop in the right direction

or you could pepper the surface with many small spider like rocket boosters
once the surface is covered...as long as they were sticking to the comet...you could fire up all the rockets and hopefully move it away

seems high tech though...like anime high tech..lol

The assorted studies done on and around it. Wish I could just point to one given study and say there ya go. I just absord oddball info and am fairly certain that is the stated odds given by the scientists. I would also reason that the shows on Discovery and the Science channel will both confirm those odds.

It's probably because there has been some weird comet that has been passing our solar system recently... I think it's named "Holmes."

if he is, then he is not using that information correctly

the mayan calendar runs out in 2012, but who is to say the world ends just because the calendar runs out?

it could just be the start of a new calendar that was never developed...but I seriously doubt it has anything to do with the world ending

Asteroids have pretty much been mapped. We're relative sure we're safe from them.

The thing with comets is they come at us from the Kuiper Belt and Ord Cloud... beyond the outer planets at the rim our our solar system with irregular orbits...

So, it's always a "thing" that we could get hit by a comet at any given time without very much warning... it's nothing "new" per se, just understood as one of the fewer unknowns as we learn more about our solar system.

But we've been under that threat since the dawn of life on Earth, so, even though it might make for good t.v., not really worth worrying over, I think.

D what has been pretty much been mapped?
I think we are at around 5% mapped to date, maybe a few percent more. Then there are still fairly large asteroids within range that can easily be slightly knocked off of balance or rotation. That also says nothing of any deep comets. Since one thing is very certain, Earth and the moon have been a rotating target that has been hit over and over again.

Oh jace I do seem to recall the last cartush (spelling) at the end date of Dec 21st 2012 shows the god of death as well as other gods pouring down water from the sun, moon, and the snake god pouring it down as well.
Oddly this date lines up perfectly when Earth fill finish a wobble that happens like every 26k years or so, that is also will align with other planets, and that the sun will be at the center of the milky way if I recall.

Now they seemed to be very strong on keeping long time and not many think they just did not finish a calendar. At best assuming it is not an end of the world situation, it is a time of great change and then the calendar again resets. Yet somehow they were damn fucking acurate with their time keeping and astrological predictions.

is it weird that I am overly anxious to see what happens?

I was the same way with y2k....I guess if the shit is going to hit the fan in my lifetime, I want front row seats! hahaha

I am anxious as well, but only since they were so damn acurate with so much other shit. Hell even if you follow the assorted calendars and cartushes (spelling), their future predictions or actually history repeating to them is very damn accurate. Much better than Nostrodomus ever could claim. They gave time periods and dates.

The Sun will never be in the center of the galaxy.

A supermassive black hole is at the center of our galaxy.

Err I mixed it up thanks for the catch, the sun lines up visually with the center or something along those lines. Most of this all is from memory and I am a bit medicated already.

"On the winter solstice of 2012, the noonday Sun exactly conjuncts the crossing point of the sun's ecliptic
with the galactic plane, while also closely conjuncting the exact the center of the galaxy."

Medicine really kicking in, I go to sleep now. If needed just do a few searches on solar alignment december 21st 2012, it will have all the info you need and even charts, graphs, etc.

Night.

Sorry... I should have qualified what I said a bit more.

We've pretty much mapped each asteroid that's of a diameter large enough to cause a cataclysmic event if it were to strike earth. The 5%-or-so we've mapped (you're correct there) are something like 99% of the largest ones.

Granted, a good deal more asteroids could cause some severe damage - especially if it lands in your neighborhood... but, from a planetary perspective, we're feel pretty safe now when it comes to asteroids crashing down on us.

And so we turn our attention to the more random beast in our efforts of science-fiction horror - the Kuiper Belt/Ord Cloud native objects (i.e. comets)

Hope that clears my statement up - sorry to have caused any confusion.
