You may be eating INSECTS and don't know it

http://www.evilmadscientist.com/article.php/EatBugs2

Cliff Notes: The food industry's use of insects/insect residue is more common than you think.

Comment: Definitely makes me read the ingredients list of any candy/food product more closely.

SIDE NOTE: An OHIO UNIVERSITY STUDY says that Americans eat ONE to TWO POUNDS OF INSECTS each year without knowing it. There's even an FDA "allowed contaminants" regulation.

Ok, the first link wasn't too bad. But the second one, I actually couldn't finish reading it. It's a mix of being grossed out, and really tired.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go swallow some spiders in my sleep.

I read the 'book of lists' over and over as a kid and that taught me about things that are allowed to be in our food. When somewhere fails health inspections it makes me think how bad you have to be to be even worse than what is already allowed by law.

Seriously what is wrong with some insects?
Hell I personally think we should get off our weird high horse and allow in a whole crap load of assorted proteins that a good chunk of the rest of the world fines perfectly acceptable, unless of course we (the US) shun them and point and say WTF you people are fucking sick, lets sick that terrorist organization PETA on your ass.

Indeed... somehow we all started teaching each other what is and isn't gross and base our choices on that perception rather than what is actually reality.

I fail to see how eating a few high protein insects is supposed to be more gross than gutting and carving up a bloody cow.... but that's just me.

That's why there's really no such thing as a "cruelty-free" diet. Maintaining life often involves, unintentionally at best, snuffing out other animal life forms. For example, to produce vegetables and grains, tons of insects, small mammals, and other animals get killed in the farming process.

My main note doesn't make a judgment call re whether insects are 'gross' or not. I agree with you and ASM that dietary choices are primarily cultural. My main note's point is the seemingly neutral labeling food companies use when using insect protein for candies, snacks, etc.

My side note dealt with the FDA's approved guidelines re "food contaminants" (in quotes cuz, like you guys noted, its a cultural judgment re contaminant vs food).

'RED FISH AND OCEAN PERCH

Parasites: 3% of the fillets examined contain 1 or more parasites accompanied by pus pockets'

Oh yuk!

Reminds me of a story I heard (Urban Myth?)

A bloke goes into KFC and has a fillet burger - asks for no mayo - he bites into it and finds mayo - takes it back and the counter guy insists thet he didnt put mayo i it. Closer inspection reveals its a cyst in the meat and the 'mayo' was pus.

I remember working next to a meat plant where they made sausage etc.. taking break with some of their workers and they'd tell us how a certain amount of rat hair and such is acceptable. Pretty gross. But thats how it is.

I did stop eating at restaurants after working in the kitchen of a well rated restaurant when I was about 18 or so. I worked there 1 night and walked out. So many fucking roaches and other insects I'd never seen before, or since.. and a mouse.. and the kicker was when I took out some boxes there was a muskrat out there.. all in one night. It was fucking wild kingdom sick.

Do yourself a favor and just learn to cook, lol. And cook meat WELL DONE

If you eat Jelly or Jam you are eating some bugs. My mom worked for one of the major Jelly/Jam manufacturers and they have a "bugs per million" acceptability policy. they allow a certain amount of bugs per million parts of the product and the number was pretty high. So if you make a PB&J you are almost certainly putting bugs on the bread.
