Will Metallica get it right?

I saw a couple interviews with Lars Ulrich and Kirt Hammet talkin about thier new album some and they are saying basically they are returning to thier roots of the metal sound.

The sound that made Metallica from the 80's.

This has got me really curious, cuz after St. Anger I lost all respect for thier music as it was the worse album in music history, at least to me.

So...
I wonder if they can pull it off.

I lost a lot of respect for them when they went from a garage band who was only available via blank cassette copies to a commercial band that hated having their music shared because it meant not making more millions.

Yes, let's lose all the respect for all the people who don't like the results of their hard work stolen.

Didn't they say the same thing about St. Anger before that disaster came out, that it would be a return to their roots? I remember the days when my entire wardrobe consisted of Metallica concert t-shirts, but I honestly don't have a lot of faith in them ever coming close to what they were. When "And Justice for All" came out I bought it on cassette tape and played it so much I burnt the tape out, and I remember thinking that it was the perfect polished metal sound. Too bad it was all down hill from there...

If they were a commercial band to begin with, I would be backing them up. But making copies is how anyone ever heard them in the first place. Blank cassettes were their biggest distributors.

In a sense, they turned their backs on all the people who loved them before they became a radio band.

I have paid for their albums, and I've had some copies of their "garage days"... they are hard to find now. And while I agree that they have a right to be mad about losing out on the money... I don't think they are the right "voice" to stand against it when they would be no one without it in the first place.

Yup that about sums it up.
I can play better riff's than any of that shit on St. Anger in a drunken stupor on broken out of tune strings.

The polished sound of old Metallica from song like Ride The Lightening, Master Of Puppet's was pure mastery of the art. I do not want better I just want what I expected from Metallica in the late 80's to even early 90's.

I haven't liked shit since And Justice For All. The self titled album was cool for a little while, but I got tired of hearing the shit all the time on 10 different radio stations.

Way too many other bands I would rather listen to than Metallica.

Yes, a world-famous band is likely the worst advocate against piracy. Love your reasoning. Iron logic.

Ah, but I didn't say "world-famous" nor did I say they were the "worst".
The reason you can't understand the reasoning is that you just made up your own words.

I love people who say shit like this. I can't like whatever band because they became mainstream. They got popular by dispersing tapes and whatever other kinds of media they could to get big, and then once they get big, people talk shit like they sold out.

What kind of fucking local band sets out to not be popular? Isn't that the whole point? They made it big, good for them, most don't. I am in agreement that their music currently sucks nard, but I can't hate on them for getting popular. Their music was the shit back in the day.

It was a different time then, since a metal band couldn't get on commercial radio and there was no satellite radio or internet for them to spread their music. Every metal band of that era used to rely on bootleg tape traders to spread their music, but can you really blame them for wanting to cash in when it was warranted?

Nope, as I said, I can't blame them... I just don't think they were the best choice to be the loudest voice.
As I said, it was as if they turned their backs on all those who were there from day one.

Those people, including myself, still paid money for their albums because we loved their music and support them... but even if someone paid for for their album AND downloaded so much as a single Metallica track.... they'd find Metallica's attorney's at their door with lawsuit in hand.

True, but as much as it pissed me off then I can still understand why they did it. They were trying to protect their work, and at that time Napster was setting a dangerous precedent. How many people that used Napster were only downloading one song? I'm not saying I don't do it...shit, I download free music on a regular basis. But can I blame anyone but myself if a lawsuit shows up on my door one day? Just because I supported them in the past doesn't give me the right to steal from them today...

Bring back Cliff Burton and Dave Mustaine and they might rock again. Although I bet Burton would be easier to bring back than Mustaine.

Despite their differences, I'm sure that it would be easier to resolve them than to bring Burton back to life.

It's probably a 50/50 split. Hammett filled his spot alright anyways except the vocals.

Doesn't really matter, Megadeth kicks ass.

Countdown to Extinction was an album I could listen to start to finish over and over again.... without getting tired of it.

And Youthanasia had some of the most riveting lyrics/messages that I had ever heard at the time.

Well here is the stuff they have been working on. Sounds OK, but hard to tell when it's live.

New Metallica song 1

Agreed. Those are probably 2 of my favorite all time albums. Right up there with Anthrax State of Euphoria.

You'll notice that at least they have guitar solos back. That had to be the stupidest thing about St. Anger, no guitar solos on ANY song.

Hammet's solo's were fucking great, if not the greatest ever.
Why they would remove that strength is fucking insane.

Metallica died when they released the black album. People were just too busy buying into the MTV hype to smell their rotten corpse. They've just been digging up the body and making it dance for money ever since.

Those new songs suck! They need to give it up after this. If Rick Rubin can't turn them around, they are hopeless.

"Whoooa whooooa whooooa yeah" come on wtf is that. Trying too hard to be like The Misfits now?

The last song I liked was "I Disappear".

I am afraid Metallica ultimately lost it when Jason left and Jamez got off the booze.

I was a die-hard fan for a decade, but it's just been going to shit for years now.

I want James' babies! Mmmmmmmm

I did watch this show were the camera was following them as they made St. Anger I believe. Lars and James were arguing about the dumbest shit I had ever heard two people argue about. I had to turn it off. My female boner was going away for James. It was horrible. My 8 year old nephew could argue about something more intelligent. I believe Lars told James to stop thinking about words for a song because it was causing him to rush his thoughts and he couldn't concentrate. *sakes head in embarrassment* It was not something I would ever except to hear James speak about. I know they fight a lot and now I know why. haha

I really hope they get it right. I miss them so much.

I have to agree with you on this one. They need to start taking some serious drugs or drinking, then put out an album and sober up. Just party when producing and then get back to normal life. haha
