![]() While i'm on my anti-school kick:
My kids have never given race a second thought. people are all different colors and clearly they could see that, but never really thought of people as being in categories of color. I remember my daughter describing one of her teachers as "the one with really dark skin, like chocolate", lol. Humorous as it is, she didn't even have a word for a person of color and described her the best way she could. that says a lot. Now they are teaching American history and all this stuff about slavery and racism. NOW, my kids clearly know that there's a difference. I heard her say "look there's a black person", "they used to be treated really badly". When I heard her refer to the person as "they" I thought that was awful. These kids are 9yo, 10yo, for Christ sakes let them live life without the burden of that knowledge. At least until they are older. I'm not saying keep them ignorant, but why in gods name would you teach a young impressionable child that "people are different"? It seems insane to me! Am I out of line here? |

Because "they" were treated bad and still are. Though the Indian was treated even worse and was better of pretending to be black. Though your daughter will not be able to point one out odds dictate unless it is on TV and then it prolly isnt a real Indian (native american).
That really is not racism, that is history. Not to mention there are categories of people regardless. It is how you treat each that dictates racism. Oh yeah people are different and that is crucial. We all are unique. Fight the clog.

They need to be taught MORE about it, not less.

Well if you don't teach history, you could be doomed to repeat it.
I remember not realizing the class clown Ricky was east Indian until we hit grade 7 and someone pointed it out to me. He was just one of the kids to us (and still was after we realized the difference.) We knew Aretha was black because she told us so and she sang jazz like nobody's business. In high school she would say, "I'm a big, black, beautiful woman! Rawr!" The only kids who were actively ostracized for their race were those who were a) hard to communicate with and/or b) didn't try to mingle with the rest of us. Poor Aaron didn't know any English except please and thank you when he joined us in grade 8, but by grade 11 he was everybody's friend. We were taught racism was bad (mmkay) and so yesterday, so it didn't really affect us.

The sad reality of it is... if they don't learn about races in school.... complete with their histories... than they'll learn it somewhere else.
It's not the way it should be, but it's the way it is. Be glad your kids can learn it first in an education environment. |

I agree. People from different races are in fact different. Kids are blessed with accepting people the way they are no matter what color their skin is. But history is history and we need to teach our children about slavery, racism, and discrimination..... It's an important part of our history that should never ever be repeated.

Black people were treated badly. Your children are being taught about the reality of the world we live in. Get over it. |

yes and if black kids didn't have that drilled into their heads all day every day and no one ever mentioned it again or ever told another kid of any color, in one generation black and whites would be equal. -bmb

Teach them that everyone is the same. That would be a lie. Kids should be taught that everyone is a human, but they are different and that makes them interesting. If you care about your kids, don't send them to public schools.

this thread is just shocking... i don't see anything wrong with what your children have been taught, would you rather have them live with their head in the sand? blacks and whites and any other race for that matter ARE differant groups, therefore when one refers to another it would be a 'they', its very simple english. this also reminds me of a quote.... ignorance of history forces it to repeat itself.
