It's the end of the world as we know it.

Doesn't it seem that way...

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid.
Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs.
Feed it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, Ladder start to clatter with fear fight down height.
Wire in a fire, representing seven games, a government for hire and a combat site.
Left of west and coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck.

Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.
Look at that low playing! Fine, then.
Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do.
Save yourself, serve yourself.
World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and the revered and the right, right.
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign towers.
Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn.
Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood letting.
Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down.
Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no fear cavalier.
Renegade steer clear!
A tournament, tournament, a tournament of lies.
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental drift divide.
Mountains sit in a line, Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs.
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom!
You symbiotic, patriotic, slam book neck, right? Right.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it. can't I have some time alone?
It's the end of the world as we know it can't I have some time alone? and I feel fine...fine...

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it. can't I have some time alone?
It's the end of the world as we know it can't I have some time alone? and I feel fine...fine...

It isn't like REM is any big name group. While I know the song and the tune (which I can't get out of my head now), I had to Google who sang it.

"Loosing My Religon" has always been a favorite of mine by REM.

Of course, "The One I Love" reminds of every girl I've been with since that song.

you might have gotten 3 bands at a match level of REM, but I wouldn't say bigger. REM was HUGE in their day.

NIN and Alice in Chains never got to that level of stardom.

Man in the moon is one of my all time REM favorites, I of course grew up a huge Andy Kaufman fan, so it touches a few nerves.

You have to be either kidding or just playing up to the crowd. When they signed their current contract it was the biggest contract ever. They were for a large portion of the 90's next to U2 as the biggest group in the world.

That song doesn't come off their best known album or their best sounding album (to my ears) but it is one of their best known. To me, a lot of their best songs as the ones the MTV crowd that found them after Losing My Religion don't know but I like that one too.

And yes, they are my favorite group. Stipe is a poet even if you don't agree or been in a musical coma for a few decades.

And let's not get on how Cobain named Stipe as a major influence to the point of him being the god father to his child.

btw..good on you for new adventures of hi-fi..I tend to think of that as their forgotten album and one of their best. Automatic For The People is of course a bit better ;)

My first REM album was Green...bought it in Venice Beach, California.

I remember driving through Windward Circle going to the Post Office and Stand blaring on my car stereo from the Cassette.

Green was also my first (though I have gone back and got into the older stuff too). I heard Stand the other day for the first time in a long time and forgot how nicely it fit into that grouping of REM songs that just feel good - I also put Orange Crush in that grouping. You can always tell somebody who doesn't reall know them when they say they are depressing. It more more like they have a song for every mood and sometimes the mood is down. Heck, Everybody Hurts is not depressing if you actually listen to the words. It is more like Pandora's Box in song.

I too have gone back and got caught up with their older stuff...and yeah Everybody Hurts is another one of my favorites...so many good songs...and let's not forget Stipe got to bang Natalie Merchant, that in and of itself is worthy of rock and roll history...I always found her to be hot in an exotic way.

Not bad considering his normal type ;)

One of my faves is Near Wild Heaven which Stipe doesn't even sing on but whenever I hear it I love it.

I think I will have to go put Driver 8 on now.

Me too..saw him on the first show of the tour he did with Elton John. I am not a huge fan of his but he was better on stage than Elton.

Good song but REM was only good for one song per album it seemed. Made for radio play and the rest is filler. I can't remember ever listening to an entire album of theirs.

I know they aren't to everybody's taste but I have to (of course) disagree. For starters, there isn't a bad song (to my ears) on Automatic For The People and many of their albums work as a 'whole'. Monster, Green, New Adventures In Hi FI all come to mind for that. But I guess if you are looking for singles that might be the case but to me they are an album band.
