the hun sais the surfer should be respected. google certainly respects the surfer. Alot of succefull sites give us reasons to respect the surfer...Yet, you can also make money not respecting the surfer. Lots of methods to piss off those little buggers, and alot of those ways make money(spam, popups, dialers, ETC.)

so is it more profitable if we respect the surfer, or if we fuck them up the ass like a 2 dollar whore?

The rules that apply to this business are fundamentally no different than any other. Provide a good product and/or service and the customer will respect you for it.

I personally do not use exit consoles, pop-unders, dialers, or the like in an attempt to generate revenue. In my opinion, these methods only serve to aggravate the surfer and ensure they will not return. My views are based on concrete data I've compiled from our web analytics, and not a wild hunch.

here are my two cents worth. respect the customer because if he gets burned he will think a second time about joining a pay site. the traps mess it up for all of us. make your customer happy and he will be back over and over again.

To summarize, it hardly seems worth the trouble of presenting the user with pop-up's on exit. With the proliferation of pop-up killers and the like, most of them fail to see the light of day anyway. Please note that these are clean pop-ups, with no malicious js tricks.

based on those statistics, it would be a open and shut case when it comes to the usefullness of popups. However, based on my own personal experience, popups can generate a good amount of revenue. It depends on how you use it, what your surfers are use to, and that sort of thing. Not saying your stats are wrong, just saying that they can't be used to judge the entire market based on a sampling like that.

So assuming that if used effectively, popups, spam, and other 'unclean' methods are profitable, the real question would be, if used effectively and all things being equal, would it be more profitable to sell porn the clean way, or the 'dirty' way?

I should add that my theory is based on my personal data collection and beliefs. To truly prove or disprove my theory from a mid to long-term revenue generation perspective, one would need to set a cookie to track visitor statistics. I currently am not doing this.

I think if you look at all the big earners you will find they keep and respect their clients. Do you make the $$$ these guys make.

Of course there is money to be made by ripping off the newbie, but what does this do for the reputation of the adult net. And for how long can you continue to do it. Also you are competing with avery other newbie webmaster, with little to offer.

charly, I agree that the right way to go is 'the right way'.
I am trying to get some different discussions going, this thread is in no way a reflection of what I actually do...

As for me, All my sites are actually quite clean, and except a popup here and there, are pretty respectfull to the surfer and dont fuck him.
