Should Turkey be allowed to join the EU?

Vote whether you think Turkey should be allowed to join the European Union.

Hell no, look at their history, the Ottoman Empire, their deep rooted muslim traditional ways were always a barrier to develop new reforms and push Western democracy. They massacred so many people for crying out loud and never got the blame for it. Kurds, Armenians, Greeks. Until they take full responsibility for their actions, like Germany did for the Jews, they should not even be considered to join the EU with all those human rights violations, I don't think so

I don't think Turkey is in much of a position to provide any support.

Until Turkey changes their entire political and social system, they will not be allowed to join the EU. Right now it looks like if they joined it would only cost us western European nations alot of money. GDP per capita is very low in Turkey, nothing compared to the EU countries or the US, this needs to be changed.

Literacy rating is low, the goverment needs to stimulate people to use educational facilities and if required build new schools. Access to education is below average so this requires more effort from the Turkish government.

Maybe in 5 - 10 years things will look differently for Turkey.

Turkey would not be much of a support at all.
We rather want a rich western country like Norway to join the EU.

Very good point. Although, the average EU countries GDP per capita is 3.5 times that of Turkey. So, I think it might take more than 5-10 years for Turkey to triple its economy. Especially since its economy is only growing at 6% a year.

It is not required to reach per capita levels of other EU states, there are several eastern European states that have a per capita level of 1 times as low as the EU member states - yet they will be allowed to join.

Maybe they don't need to bring themselves up to exact economic levels of other EU countries, but I seem to remember that a certain level of economic parity needs to exist to gain entry into the EU. Correct me if I'm wrong.

No need for them in the EU
What do they have to offer?
Beside that their president is quite sick and when he's gone there prolly will come a pretty extreme muslim government.
No need for that in the EU.

There hasn't been an extreme muslim government in power since the country founded (1920). Why do you think they will win this time?

Turkey is probably the most moderate muslim nation.

And it's getting better...

In many ways it's a great example to other muslim countries to join the 21st century.

I think their progress is all due to the half-naked covered-in-olive-oil man-wrestling. that really looks like fun...

(if you're drunk)
