migraines - what to do?

I had minor surgery a few weeks back (hernia) and a few days afterwards started getting crazy migraine headaches.

My doctor thinks its codeine withdrawl from stopping the Tylenol 3's I was taking after surgery and my surgeon thinks its stress related. They are occuring every night (late) in the same place (right temple) and last a few hours. They are very debilitating and during the day I have a constant minor headache. Until this all started, I never usually even get headaches so I am a bit worried why now right after I had surgery.

My doc prescribed Amerge (they sorta work but cost $18/pill). What other tips or remedies are out there to help out?

I had a spinal tap and had migraine headaches for days afterwards. Nothing the doc prescribed for me worked. Sorry no advice except to say they will probably go away before to many days go by. If Boneprone reads this he may have some advice.

I remember from somewhere that eating bananas more than usual would help prevent/subdue the pain of migraines. I might be making this up.

Are you sure they are migraines? A migraine is a pretty specific kind of headache, not just any bad headache. If migraine meds don't work, that's a good clue that its something else.

If you have headache trouble, there are a few things you can do. You should be sure to get plenty of water, and as little caffeine as possible (unless you get withdrawl). You should also be sure not to strain your eyes, or let yourself get stressed. That sort of stuff helps with most kinds of headaches.

I'm not a pot user myself. However, I read once that the only known cure for insomnia was a joint. ( I mean besides going to doctor)

And that yes, it can cure minor headaches.

I myself am a caffiene addict. I get it from RedBull and Pepsi. I'm not much of a coffeee drinker, but I'll resort to that if I have to. Without Caffiene I get the absolute worst caffiene headaches ever. It feels like smashing your head in a door would be less painful.

The only cure for me when they get that bad is... Max Strength Excedrin. It's the strongest headache med over the counter. Reason is... It's loaded with Caffiene.

However feeling your heart beating from within your body (without putting your hand on your chest to feel it), probably isn't a good sign.

Living like this will probably kill me.

I've heard lots of caffiene is good for migraines.

Have you tried massage? Massaging your scalp would help relax those muscles...

I take tylenol PM or Ambien for insomnia.

Re: why this after surgery? Did you have anethesia for this surgery? Anesthesia can have weird side effects....

I had back surgery and now I have this weird crampy thing in my left ankle.....MD says it's a post-op "syndrome"...

My friend had to do a lot of coke because he had cluster headaches all the time... but I wouldn't recommend it.

O man. a post lumbar puncture headache.. Thats the worst. I had one of these back in march. The doctor didn't have me lie flat long enough after the spinal tap and the hole in my spine didnt 'patch'. It was horrible, I could not stand up without getting an instant migraine. It lasted about 10 days. I decided to go get a blood patch. This is where they take blood from your arm and inject it into your spinal column in hopes that it will 'patch' the hole. No luck, headache lasted another 4 days or so. It was hell. Whenever getting a spinal tap, make sure its from an anistisiologist(sp?) and that they do it correctly.

Yes, I was put under, and released the next morning and felt great and stopped taking the Tylenol 3's the next day and felt wonderful. Two days later, and for the past 9 or 10 days, the migraines have been happeneing at nite while during the day I have mild headaches. Hopefully it is something temp. like side effects from anesthesia, but, it seems odd that its happening still two weeks later?

Actually migraines related to your jaw can not be relieved with medicine.

Hershie,

Your jaw might have been pulled too hard when you were put under and it may take a few months for the muscles to settle down.. Just a thought, if you have seen a doctor and they said you were okay....
It's a known fact that your mouth can be jerked open too far and set off a tmj disorder ( jaw joint ) and fibromyalagia ( muscle disorder ) when put under general anesthesia...

It happened to me after minor surgery 8 years ago. It sucked but I was back to normal ( for me ) in a few months.. The general anesthesia stressed out my whole body.

Sounds like I am babbling if you don't live with pain or have researched the above !

I sometimes get wicked migraines - my eyes hurt real bad, every sound is like a sonic boom, I experience nausea, etc etc

I pop a bunch of Excederin Migraine pills - so far, they seem to do the trick, if I catch it early enough. Myabe they will help you. Good luck, migraines suck.

Alright- I have suffered from bad migraines since 13 (now 34)

here is the deal.... If you are having migraines you will have a blurred vision and see aurias before the pain starts. My advice to you is to take heat and put it around your face, and cool packs on your neck.

If you have a migraine med take is asap when symptoms start, also down as many mountain dews as you can in about 5 minutes.

go to a dark quiet room with the hot packs and the cool packs in place and sleep for as long as you can

not necessarily true. if you have the wrong kind of headache, weed can make it worse. Those concentrated headaches behind the eyes cannot be helped by weed.

I'm about to take a puff myself right now
