Free Domain names with your hosting package is a SCAM in desguise

or is it ?

I've noticed recently hosting packages all over the web for $20 a month,..etc including 120 Gigabytes of daily transfer and a FREE domain name gift for signing with that host.

Now i am feeling this is a new way or method for hosting companies to control domain names of companies hosted with them.

Then after u build traffic and work hard on getting the domain name well known online and your BW increases, it i time to rengotiate your contract and pay for the extra B/W

and u cannot switch to a new host without loosing your domain name to them, cause technically it is not yours, it is their's !!

All in all

A piece of advice, get your own domain name thru a registrar

Wait, so I'm not saving money by locking myself into a single solution?

Well, shit! There goes my business plan.

If the domain is registed and it isn't in your name, then you should cancel the contract and walk away. Quite simply, they aren't giving you free anything.

Wake the fuck up. .com domains are less than $10 each. I can't see that being much of a reason to choose hosting based on a a savings that works out to about 84 cents a month.

So i am sending this out as a warning, own your own domain

now my friend has to register another domain in his name this timeand transfer all the members' content to be served from that other new domain

and keep his standard old contract with his host with its b/w limits just to keep his old domain with all the traffic,..etc

Since I was coming across as a bit of a dick, before (The Paulies are getting to me):

1&1 resells eNom. If you contact eNom before your time runs out, and let them know that your reseller is holding your domain hostage, and you wish to have it under your name:

Essentially, you need to be able to be verified as the owner. I haven't checked recently, but 1&1 will allow you to change yourself to the Administrative Contact if you aren't already.

Send an email from your Administrative contact to eNom, or contact them first, and tell them you wish to move your domain to your own privately held ownership, and they will do so. Pay the $10 for another year with eNom if you have to, and transfer to your registrar of choice whenever; you can happily point it to ANY service you choose.

Thanks lot for the tip about eNom mate

the key is to be able to prove you're the owner of this domain though, and it can be a lot of trouble to just be able to do that ! So stay safe guys and mae sure you fully ow your own domain !

One thing i wanted to advice my friend about but couldn't i actually told him to come and ask here

What would be a good Registrar ?

This isn't a new way of marketing for hosting companies at all. They've been doing this as far back as 1999 that I can remember. Its best to ask them up front what happens to the domain should you decide in the future to leave their hosting. A domain is ten bucks, there is absolutely no way a free domain should play any role in deciding who you host with. Why on earth would anyone take all that time to develop a site around a domain they don't own?

Smart, it is and in fact having your host register your domain can be a scam. That's why DWHS has a separate registration service. It protects the user.
