Laptop DIY people inside please.

How hard is it to personally replace the main fan inside of a dell laptop. It is out of warranty but still serves a great purpose and have no need to upgrade nor pay dell some outragious fee to replace it unless it is like brain surgery inside of a laptop.

If it were a desktop I would not be asking as I know that is simple.

I know on my laptop the fan is pretty easy to get to...you just unscrew two screws on the bottom, pop the keyboard up and unscrew some more screws and the fan is right there...i have a gateway though

in all honesty though man, every single laptop is different, so generalizing "a dell laptop" is like saying "how can I change the battery on a cell phone?"

what model is it?

my old inspirion had a manual on how to remove everything yourself..

pretty sure dell provides the manual for all laptops on how to take it apart and replace stuff.

its not hard, just take a bit of taking the thing apart.

just out of curosity, why do you think the fan needs replacing?

is it just overheating? if so, how often do you clean the fan?

my laptop requires me to clean the fan about every 3 months or will start overheating like crazy

Because I can see it and the blades are not moving when the laptop is turned on.

Oh I was cleaning it about every 2-3 weeks same with keyboard.

shouldn't be that hard to replace, just start unscrewing shit and keep track of where all the screws go

my first time I took my laptop apart was a mess, i still don't think I have all the screws in the right place

Normally its not too bad.. I would guess Dells are easy enough to get out, from what I have seen of the desktops they are normally pretty easy to work on.. I have never torn apart a dell laptop, just lots of toshibas in a previous life...

Good news: It's a simple replacement.

Bad news: It's going to require a nearly-complete disassembly. If you don't have odd sized torx screwdrivers and have the patience of a saint, just take out the HD, and take it into a service center with the fan. If they fuck it up, then you get a new laptop.
