If you believe there is god you are not an agnostic.

Agnostic does NOT believe in god(s), but does not deny the existence of god(s) either.

Simply put, he hasn't an opinion yes/no unless he gets more proof for one claim or the other

Tell me, When people say God bless America, is it just a SAYING or does it tell that he/she really believes in God?

In Finland, people may say something similar, like Thank God, for God's sake

BUT

if they say it in a serious situation, I would take it that they do believe in God

I think this is the 6th or 7th time I posted this quote but here I go again! :::

"It is an insult to God to believe in God. For on the one hand it is to suppose that he has perpetrated acts of incalculable cruelty. On the other hand, it is to suppose that he has perversely given his human creatures an instrument -- their intellect -- which must inevitably lead them, if they are dispassionate and honest, to deny his existence. It is tempting to conclude that if he exists, it is the atheists and agnostics that he loves best, among those with any pretensions to education. For they are the ones who have taken him most seriously. "

There are generaly two diffrent agnostics, one is the person who has been religous but now doubts the existence of God, but isn't really sure.
The second one is the ex atheist who has come to conclusion that you can't prove gods existense or not and therefore it's meaningless to argue about it.

3rd and most important: born agnostic. We are all born agnostics. I doubt a new born baby has an opinion about God. So you don't have to have believed In god, or been an atheist, you could have been an agnostic since day one, right?

well an agnostic has an opinion about gods existence, the new born baby doesn't. Without human ifluense the baby wont even start to think if there is a god or not, the word god wont exist in the babys vocabulary...

Organized religion sucks and is the cause of most of the death and bloodshed we've seen over the past few millenia, but I believe some sort of higher power exists. I'm just not gonna kill anyone over it.

Atheism is widely misunderstood. Contrary to popular usage, an atheist does not necessarily deny the existence of god but simply lacks a belief in god/s. Most atheists I know take this position.

* Agnosticism - from the greek root gnosis "to know" and the negative "a" (no knowledge)

* Atheism - from theism, the belief in god or gods and the negative "a" (no belief)

Gnosticism deals with knowledge not belief, so it is not a legitimate third position in between theism and atheism. There is no third position because you either have a belief or you don't. If you do, you're a theist, if you don't you're an atheist. It's that simple.

Religion freaks just spend too much of their time preparing for/worrying about their "life" after death, and concentrate on doing things right by their god. All I have to say is what a fuckin waste of time, hows about people enjoy the life that they know they have right now, and instead of doing things right by a god, do what you believe is right.

I guess i would be classed as agnostic, as I don't deny the existence of a god, i just have much better things than devote my precious time to instead of someone/something that has never been proven to me exists.

So, to all those religious people out there, get a life... heh

I was disappointed I couldn't click on BOTH "atheist" and "agnostic," because clearly one can be both.

An atheist believes there is no God. An agnostic is someone whose mind isn't made up.

I don't believe in God, but my mind is open on the matter, so I'm both an atheist AND an agnostic.

I agree. The term agnostic actually has several meanings, anyways. I usually claim the first.

ag·nos·tic
- a. One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God.
- b. One who is skeptical about the existence of God but does not profess true atheism.

Most atheists do not deny the existence of God, they just have no belief. Look at the word itself: a-theism
"a" = greek prefix meaning negative
"theism" = belief in god/gods

a-theism = no belief in god/gods

Look at Agnostic in the same way:
"a" = negative
"gnosis" = greek root meaning knowledge.

Gnosticism/agnosticism deals with knowledge, not belief.
An agnostic is someone who belives that the supernatural (of which god obviously must belong), if it exists, lies outside the scope of human knowledge.

Incidentally, if anyone is interested in the subject of atheism:

I highly recommend this book

It is the best, most readable book I have ever read on the subject.

So this turned into a philosophical discussion.

You cannot possess knowledge, if you don't believe in it.

However, you can have a belief, but it doesn't mean its knowledge. You can have true or false beliefs. but knowledge is always true!!!

If I had knowledge, that God exists, I must also believe that God exists. Otherwise I wouldn't know it, right? (Knowledge requires other things in addition to belief, of course. For example, the belief must be true)
But I can believe in God without possing such KNOWLEDGE.

So atheist basically believes that there is no God, but assumes that it is possible to know whether it is true or false.

Agnostic doesn't believe in either existence or non-existence, because he thinks we cannot have knowledge about it. Agnostic can have an open mind, though, he may think that if we get more information, we can then get knowledge about this issue.
