Is war actually the catalyst for human intelligence/development?

Would we have shuttles in space, if there was no war? (Rocketry)

Would we have the ability to fly from one end of the continent to the other in such a quick manner? (Jet engines)

How about the entire Interstate road systems in America that allowed the massive boom of the middle class.

Would we have the space age polymers, fiber optics, radar, comfortable mattresses & otherwise we take for granted on a daily basis, if it wasn't for war?

And what about Tang?

It seems to me that war (controlled war, not anarchy & terror) is not only a good thing (in the long run) but also necessary to the long term future of human kind.

Feel free to add on another development directly linked to warfare.

its not war its oppresion.

humans develop faster when the majority of them are slaves.

war just helps make the lines more clear

I guess W.A.R. looks better than O.P.P.R.E.S.S.I.ON on the walls of secret societies

Not to sound too hippy but imagine what we could accomplish if we didn't have any military or any wars. All the trillions of dollars that are spent on military, even in peace time, could be put towards something else. The amount of research that could fund is staggering.

The strides in medicine as a result of war are astronomical.

If we never made anything to "destroy", what would we do if an asteroid was heading for us? Or even a hostile alien civilization?

Show them how peaceful & enlightened we are? Pray them away?

I'm all for peace....& I'm pretty fucking hippy. But i also see a clear need for a good world war once in awhile.

No doubt. Look at all the advances Canada has made as a result of having a minimal military budget.

We have been waring with each other ever since we were cave men, even if it was with just clubs and rocks but diff clans would fight for land. I think it is a human thing and not religious, I think people hide behind religion as an excuse for war. but at least we invented the nuclear bomb because of war, now that was a great leap forward..

:stop Does war increase IQ and or DQ... I think not !!!

"Is war actually the catalyst for human intelligence/development?"

NO... if people were intelligent and developed properly they would not need to seek altercations in way of seeking to engage in wars just to proof themselves more superior to others just as a method of mass control.

Does war increase ones IQ and or DQ... People spend more time thinking about creating problems as to be solved then there are people solving the actual problems created. If there were more people willing to actually solve problems as those who are creating such then there would be a lot more peace...

Just something to think about,

True there are a lot of countries that spend next to nothing on their military and they have nothing great to show for it, but, no disrespect to any of those countries, they don't have an economy like we do. We spend more on military stuff than about 95% of the countries in the world have in their entire economy. we spend around 400 billion a year on military stuff that's not even counting the sheer brain power that goes into inventing and improving the stuff we have.

thats hard to say. war creates more problems for us as humans to solve. in turn creating more possibilities to improve ourselves as humans. however war has many casualties giving us less people to help solve the problems.

but i guess in the end it does spark a reaction. which in my opinion is enough to improve and progress us as human beings. now is war essential i don't believe it is. if we focused our problems on something other then war we could still achieve that same type of formula.

if you ask me though war is not a very efficient way of moving our race forward.

another question might be is war inevitable or can it be avoided. i guess if the human race survives another 20,000 years we might find out. because its obvious we haven't learned shit from the first 20,000.

extreme pressure is the catalyst for achievement. and war sure does that. so do several other things like love and devotion. war is just so much more available to us.

yes, the comparison I read was 500 years of peace in Switzerland produces the coo coo clock while 60 years of bloody revolution in Italy produces the Renaissance. go figure?

War is industry, and with industry comes development and innovation to increase the bottom line.

Now justifying the act of war to bring us things like Tang, well that's another discussion.

As much as we'd all like to live a utopian world, free of wars, you have to admit that the world is shaped by war. It's an organic part of the planet's development.

We're basically a self-aware virus with pants, fighting with other viruses for space to build shopping malls. When the earth doesn't want us here anymore, it'll get rid of us like the flu.
