Cost to move cross-country?
What does it cost to move cross-country? As in, hiring movers to truck your stuff across country. How much "stuff" did you have? And from where to where?
Trying to figure out some pricing options.

i did that around 5 years ago, but in Canada. one end to the other (so pretty damn far). sorry i can't remember exactly how much, but it was definitely expensive, and i remember thinking it was a mistake, and should have just got rid of my stuff and bought new stuff instead. had enough things to fill a large moving truck. a couple of things got broken as well, but not a big deal.

You can ship a car uncovered for like 900 |

GET A BINDING CONTRACT!! Note that a lot of "National Brand Name Movers" are actually subcontracted out. If you don't have a lot of stuff and you're not on a set time limit, many times you can piggy back on a larger load. I did that back in the 70's when I was just moving 1 room from FL to GA.
I used to have a really website for moving stuff - I'll see if I can find it. It cost me $2K just to move my stuff 60 miles and that's with me packing everything. Are you going to Chicago? |

Mine was done a bit different than most ways...
When I did it, I pre-arranged working gigs (bartending at the time), packed everything in my car, and spent the next 3 months driving across the country. I saved up a couple grand for emergencies, and lived off of the tips I made as I stopped in each major city along the 10. Had all the paychecks sent to my new address, so that by the time I got there, I already had 3 months worth of 20-30 hour minimum wage weeks (along with about 3/4 of the 2 grand I had to start) waiting for me to help me get set up in my new place. Arguably, the best trip of my life. And I actually turned a profit off of it all. :-)

From Miami to San Deigo Cost of a Uhaul trailer and gas. But that was before it was 3$ a gallon. And the cost of hotels.
We had two dogs and the bird in the truck with us, so we had to stop at night.

![]() And when I say I "packed everything", I meant I packed the boxes up for them to move. Many other moves I've made they packed the boxes (for more $$$ of course). |

I've moved a few times, to understate what could be a book. It really depends on what you have and how much you're willing to do yourself. I've moved a 1 bedroom from Florida to Milwaukee with a 26' uhaul and a car dolly and it cost me about a grand after equipment and boxes/gas/food. I did all the packing and loading myself. I also moved a 2 bedroom from Chicago to Mississippi, and it cost about the same... but I lost $3k worth of saltwater aquarium on that trip, so the bottom line is arguable. I guess, since you're asking the question here, it comes down to the bare-bones price. Check the price of a uHaul, and then mapquest your trip. Cross-Country can mean a lot of things, but I'm going to assume you mean coast to coast. San Diego CA to Charlotte NC is 2386 miles. If you can split the driving with a friend, great, otherwise you'll have to stop at hotels or coordinate your shifts with truckstops (showers!) and rest-stops (sleep!). driving a uHaul, towing a vehicle, and accounting for he inevitable road construction you will encounter along the way when driving cross country, you can plan on being on the road for at least 28 hours. (Mapquest says 35, but mapquest drives like old people fuck.) Anyway, while you can drive more than 12 hours at a shift, it's fucking stupid when you're driving something that big, especially if you're towing a car. Don't do it. If you're new to cross country driving, in fact, stick to 10 or less. Not only is all your shit at risk - you're jepordizing small children and people's mothers when you start pushing yourself too far behind the wheel of something like that. Just don't do it. Sorry... back to the topic. If you are driving alone, and want to stay in hotels, you have two choices. 1, call ahead and get rates for the hotels you plan on staying at. 2, figure $75 a night average, assuming you are ok with staying at Shady Lane's. I just realized I'm rambling here.... And I'm off for the night. I've got a ton more where that came from. ![]() |

Umm if this is for you sly, considering your personal limitations. I would only bring what is really required and or not replaceable. Sell everything else and then get it moved. Not sure if any of the POD companies offer transport yet though I would not be surprised if they do.

the easiest way to move - they bring a trailer to your house, you load it, they come get it, drive it to your new house, you unload it, they come pick the empty trailer back up...
http://www.upack.com cost my mom like 1200$ to move from kentucky to arizona with them. |

If that's the case - definitely sell or toss everything. Everything you own can most likely be replaced, and can definitely be lived without. The more crap you carry the more stress you carry, and if you're starting up fresh, you want as little stress as possible. GL ![]() |

Don't forget to add in the cost of gas, that's the worst.

Most convenient thing ever moving cross country. You pack them up, they load them on a big truck and transport them. Then they can even hold them in storage if needed, until you want them delivered. They drop off empty crates, you fill them up, and its really easy for what it is. You put your own locks on them, and the wooden crates have these big covers on them. It cost us like 2k for two pods/crates. I will use them again next time I move also. Nothing was broken or tampered with, and the crates don't even shake up much they are so large. Best service ever, worth every penny. |

I just did it. Ballpark: $25k.
This is a great service you should look into: www.pods.com We used Pods, and they were fantastic. Everything they promised, they delivered. 1 Pod itself is approx. $5k door to door.

Another tip: start boxing stuff up early.
Also, do a yard sale.
