If I was buying one of those, I would probably get a plasma. I opted for a DLP though. I wanteda big tv, and did not want to have to take out a second mortgage on my house to get it.
So the DLP worked for me. Have a 61" samsung that I am very pleased with.

When I was buying a new TV the salesman asked me about light in the house. Since I have more window than wall in my main living area and no blinds, I obviously said it was very light in there. He steered me towards the LCD and it's perfect.
When/if I decide to turn part of the basement into a theater room, I'll go plasma. |

Very little difference between the two nowadays. Plasma still has the edge on color and viewing angles. It generally comes down to what will be the main use of it. If you intend to hook it to a computer system everynow and then, LCD would be better in the long run.
Check out these articles. They were written fairly recently. http://www.cnet.com.au/tvs/0,239035250,240036500,00.htm http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/lcdtv-plasmavslcd.shtml http://tv.suite101.com/article.cfm/lcd_vs_plasma_vs_dlp

Plasma - better contrast (blacks suck on LCD), better viewing angle and solid picture regrdless of distance (and angle) unlike with LCD where colors shift the further you sit from the panel - which is due to light leaks on an LCD which affects colors as percieved by human eyes.
Price wise - in 50" and over market, plasmas are a safer bet as well. LCDs have better resolution, but plasma beat them in picture quality anytime. |

My DLP LCD is visually equivalent to plasmas that cost three and four times as much.
The specs on the plasmas are a little better, but side by side visual comparisons really don't show a difference that justifies the cost difference. |

I have both... the Plasma is much better.
Not that the LCD is bad, but the viewing angle is nowhere near what the plasma is. I've tested blueray and hd-dvds on both. |

Plasma is better...FACT. People that say LCD don't know what they're talking about...and that's it.

Your what the who??!?
I have a 52" Panasonic RP LCD, its almost a year old now. I'm not very happy with the blacks, so when watching darker movies its not the greatest. For video games and vibrant movies its brilliant though. LCD's have come a long way in the last little while, contrast ratios of 10,000:1 and great black levels have put its black almost on par with plasma. I would opt for a LCD either Sharp or Samsung. Plasmas are still overpriced. |

LCD. Plasmas die prematurely.
Of course, you can always buy one of those "protection plans" at the store and then have it fall off the wall, or get hit by lightening. >8-) |

under 46" lcd is superior in every way. Over 46" the resolution difference is noticeable so you have to go plasma and deal with the fact that plasma suffers from burn in and in about 3 years the gas inside eventually "wears out" for lack of the correct term and the picture will never get as bright as it used to.
EDIT: At exactly 46" the nice lcds, like the samsungs, are perfect too but the cheap ones are not.

I still remember walking into a room a year or so ago with a 60+ inch plasma with HDTV with 10 guys watching football (several in the adult biz). I stood there for several minutes and announced I couldn't tell the difference. I was politely asked to leave the room ;)

What looks best to you may not look best to others. I personally like the smoothness in motion of plasma for movies. It all in the eye of the beerholder.
