"They'd be going in without Canadian support..."

Canada Won't Back U.S. Strike on Iraq - Manley
Sun Sep 8, 6:14 PM ET

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada will not back the United States if it decides to launch a pre-emptive strike to oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein ( news - web sites), Deputy Prime Minister John Manley said on Sunday in an interview during CTV's "Question Period."

Manley said Canada was not willing to become involved in a U.S.-led strike on Iraq because there was not sufficient evidence that Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction or of any link to al Qaeda.

"As for going in and changing the regime, as opposed to going in and ensuring that there are no weapons of mass destruction, we haven't signed on to that," Manley told CTV.

"They'd be going in without Canadian support, but I'm not so sure they'd be going in alone," he added.

Canada has been urging the return of U.N. weapons inspectors to Iraq to ensure the country is not developing weapons of mass destruction, Manley said.

Manley's statement echoes earlier comments made by Canadian Foreign Minister Bill Graham, who told Reuters on Friday that Canadian troops would not join the U.S. in an attack on Iraq if Washington did not provide enough justification.

President Bush ( news - web sites) has begun talking to world leaders to make his case for ousting Saddam and will address the United Nations ( news - web sites) on the issue of Iraq next week.

Iraq is expected to dominate talks between Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Bush when they meet in Detroit on Monday.

I think its just for support/belief in Bush's strikes. True, our military is by far inferior, heck what do you expect when all of Canada has the population of just California. But when G8 countries don't support the US's decision, it makes it a lot tougher to justify the attack to the rest of the world.

MrPopup, why do you post things like that? You're only going to receive numerous replies telling you that the US does not care about getting military support from Canada because the Canadian military is so small and useless.

You only embarass yourself and your country by posting things like that.

Going to try to stay out of the bitchfest..

But why does every single (seemingly) foriegn guy here think that the US cares much whether the world supports it's actions or not?

You probably don't (at least shouldn't) care what the US thinks of your countries actions, and hell, I could care less myself in most cases. Why does it seem all the EU bitches about is the US doing this and that?

I'm all for isolationism. But, if we feel that Saddam is just a ticking bomb and he will indeed one day get the capability to attack the US (or allies for that matter), we will go in. Period.

I'm not saying that's the case, hell if I know. But, if it was the case why would we give two fucks about the rest of the world not liking us stomping over saddam? Last I checked we were our own country.

We all know how far doing nothing got you guys in WWII (well, all of us.. US didn't do anything either to be fair).

But oh well, when I grew up I had these happy happy thoughts that the US and most of the EU were happy fun fun friends and such, having fought WWII together and all that. But, I grew up and realized instantly there is a ton of animosity for ANYTHING someone can think of coming from the EU to the US.

I really can't say I hear of too much US -> EU hate going on though, unless of course you include france in the EU.

To sum things up: Why the fucking hell does the EU (or anyone) give two shits if the US wants to take it upon itself to fuck over some asshole dictator. The only thing I can think of, is you guys think saddam is a great guy who's good for his country.

Ah well, I shoulda stayed out.

-Phil

Rather than have someone like me tell you the answer to that, why don't you do a little history research of the last 90 years and find out for yourself? Because dude, the short answer to your question is "many times".

Have fun.

I agree that the US should care that Canada (and other countries) do not support an attack on Iraq, however, seeing Canadians come on this board and post articles like that makes Canadians look like they're always trying to act like they always know what is right for the US to be doing, and if Canada isn't supporting the US then their actions must obviously be wrong.

Chretien will back the US after the meeting on Monday as well he should. The entire world should.

Christ, Saddam lost the war and was given sanctions. Then HE started dictating the rules???

If your ever convicted of anything and put on probation for something, tell the judge that "Those conditions don't satisfy me. These are the following terms to which I will agree if you are to put me on probation."

If on the off chance he agrees to this...breach your probation. Then when they haul your ass back into court, tell the judge that the terms to which you agreed were unsatisfactory and that he'd better give you ANOTHER chance under YOUR terms, or you might just commit that crime again.

See how far that gets you.

Ahh...stats...amusing but generally useless...a handy tool for the spin doctors to reinforce a statement, although other stats would reinforce an opposing view...

Here's what I mean...

OTTAWA, February 4, 2002 ? Canadian exporters of agriculture and agri-food products laid claim to an increased slice of the international marketplace between January and November 2001 by sending more products to more countries and pushing export numbers past all previous records to $24.4 billion.

More Stats: Agricultural Exports to the U.S.
(2000) $14,167,000,000
(2001) $16,592,000,000

As to who needs who..again this is all a matter of the spin...the United States needs Canada to keep agricultural products on it's citizen's tables...but on the other hand Canada needs the U.S. to buy the surplus agricultural product.

Here's the key paragraph:

"Iraq is expected to dominate talks between Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Bush when they meet in Detroit on Monday."

I'm betting the story might be different after the meeting tomorrow. This article seems to have jumped the gun a bit.

Well, in some people's mind, ignorant = doesn't comply with my rather narrow world view.

I personally think that after 10 years, negotiating with Saddam Hussein to ensure that the Weapons Inspectors are allowed back in would result in very much the same sort of assurance that Neville Chamberlain got from that German feller about guaranteeing the remnants of Chechosolvakia. I believe that in spite of the fact that it comes out of Bush's mouth, because this game has been going on for a long time. I fail to understand why the EU, Canada, and our other allies don't see it.

Or maybe they do. This could be a way of telling the chump in the White House that he doesn't run the world, and that simple-minded warnings about "evil ones" don't play with the rest of the world. He has displayed a contempt for standing treaties and for international cooperation unlike any I've seen in my lifetime. Could just be that the chickens are coming home to roost.

Again...all in the way you read it...since the U.S. depends on Canadian exports...you could also say that without Canada, the U.S. would not be able to adequately feed it's people or produce enough oil and gas to run it's vehicles, it's industry...and so on and so on... I think the key term is trading "partners". Both countries are highly dependent on each other.

And no Gemini..if you read my post I think you will see that the basics went right over YOUR head...

As you will see, if you read...my post did not support one view or the other...instead it simply pointed out how statistics can be used to support either position...

I think Canada is much more dependent on US than US on Canada. Do you think US would be hurting if we stoped
exporting cars and other products? My answer is NO. They would just buy it somewhere else or start producing it on its own.
But our economy would be devastated.

Whatever. Fact is, the US values it's allies, as they should. Well, at least your government does, it's regular civilians (or some of them obviously) have somewhat narrower fields of thinking.

I think that's called a free market economy - no one in Canada denies the fact that the US is a great trading partner, that's not the issue.

A free market economy will always have customers - why on earth do you think that the US would disappear or start a Canadian embargo.

I think we could handle Latvia on our own without "big brother's" help.

I think I am liking GFY better before I am learning te read english. There are many silly peoples in here. I am reading this to my family and every one has tearing in their eyes from so much to laugh.

My family finds GFY more entertaining than Latvian television.

It's about who is dependent on who. It's all in the numbers.
85% of our economy is dependent on US. That's not my guess, it's a fact. Do you think that 85% of US economy is dependent on Canada.

BTW, the state of our military is not fault of Canadian people, but our stupid socialists governments. At the end of WWII Canada had 1 million men army. What we have today? 50 000?
Something like that. Lets not forget about 300 outdated german Leopard Tanks and our brand new used submarines, which are sinking everytime they put them in the water.
