Barry Bonds just hit #755 in San Diego...

off of Clay Hensley to tie Hank Aaron on the all-time list. No matter what your opinion of the guy a record is about to fall than I never thought I would see in my lifetime. He still has a few more at bats tonight to possibly break the record...

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree a bit. As much as I dislike Bonds, he is doing it in an era where the pitchers are also on steroids, HGH, and a ton of other pharmaceuticals.

Missed what, him cheating his way to a record? Bonds wouldn't be near 700 HR if he hadn't cheated. Hank Aaron still LEGIT home run king.

steroids help you build muscle mass thats it so yes if he did do steroids he cheated but it has nothing to do with timing and putting the bat on the ball that is just talent and skill so even if he did steroids I still think that he deserves alot of credit

Please. A pitcher on steriods is like Stephen Hawking on Viagra.

Sorry, but you are wrong. You would be surprised what certain steroids and HGH can do for a pitcher's velocity and stamina. The old excuse for a pitcher was they didn't use steroids because big muscles hindered their ability to pitch, but that was before people realized the lean muscles gains you can achieve...

not credit for cheating credit for being one of the best hitters to ever play the game there are two years that he is alleged to have taken steroids one mvp's before one mvp after look at his career batting avg, slugging avg, gold gloves, on base % scratch those two years from the books plug in his career averages for those years and bang he is still in the top 10 all time and top 3 in HR's

so yeah I think he deserves some credit

BS. no pitcher is pitching any faster than they did 20 year ago. Randy Johnson was pitching 100 MPH back in the 80's. How come there aren't pitchers pitching 110-120 MPH now if they are on steroids?

Just 2 years, boy you are a fool. Try 10. And if he's so good why bother to cheat anyways? What being in the top 5 in HR wasn't good enough? He's a cheater fuck him. Only good thing is maybe his cheating ass will retire and we can enjoy baseball again. Another good thing is that the steriods will most like fuck him up later in life and shorten it.

In the late '80's, when the steroid era officially started. If you do a little research you will see the the number of pitchers with that explosive stuff vastly increased around that time. Rather than get into a whole cut and paste thing, just do a search on Google and you will see the number of flame throwers from yesterday compared to today, adjusting of course for the increase in teams...

yeah cause once he retires there will be no more steroids in baseball right?

From this day on every record that is gonna get broken is going to be suspect...shame the game had to take this path.

I didn't say that...I said the sheer number of pitchers that could pitch in the 90's greatly increased during the steroid era. Before that a guy like Nolan Ryan or Sandy Koufax was an anomaly...

I'm sure the 80's are ancient history to you. I was watching baseball in the 80's considering I was in HS then while you were probably in diapers so please stop patronizing me like I'm unaware what went on back then.

One more note on this subject BASEBALL DIDN"T BAN STEROIDS UNTIL 2002 so any player who used before then wasn't cheating according to baseball's rules and Bonds and others under investigation have been tested over and over again since and never tested positive, other who have tested have been punished severely I love how people buy the spin the league has put on this since 2002 its all about covering their asses when they knew it was going on they did nothing about it looked the other way for years finally did the right thing in 02 so for them to redirect the blame from them and try to retro punish players for shit that they did prior is a joke

this is true but it doesn't add much to Bonds' case as the legitimate home run king of all time - pitchers are not helped anywhere near directly as much as a home run hitter is by the use of steroids. Bulking up a pitcher's arm isn't going to make him put 5 miles on his fastball or make his breaking ball break better - Bonds' record will be a function of two benefits of his steroid use - the ability for his body at an advanced baseball age to recover better and to train harder prolonging his career and the muscle bulk it puts on has a direct effect on his ability to hit home runs - power. Without steroids Bonds would never have been anywhere close to this record. He is not facing superior pitching to what Aaron did in his day - in Aaron's day there were 4 man pitching staffs, practically every team had at least 2 aces, some had 4 20 game winners - pitching depth sucks in major league baseball today - Bonds is hitting against a lot of guys who should not be in the major leagues.
on the other hand in Aaron's day relief pitching wasn't as specialized, there were no guys groomed to be closers.

Without steroids Bonds would not be within 150 homers of the record - and no even with pitchers using chemicals today Bonds is not facing superior pitching relatively to what Aaron faced.

The media hates Bonds - with good reason. But I hope that when Alex Rodriguez breaks Bonds record they don't forget that most of A Rod's career has been smack in the center of the steroid era.

That is referring to a pitcher that threw in the 80's at best being able to reach the low to mid 90's. Once again, I am saying that the sheer numbers of pitchers that can throw with that velocity increased, not that anyone is throwing 110. The ridiculous amount of pitchers blowing out their elbows proves that the human body is not equipped to handle that increase...

Also I believe steroids were against the law even back then so it shouldn't matter if baseball made it officially illegal in the game since people using it were already breaking the law.

yes they were and I am not saying that he isn't an asshole for breaking the law he is they all are fuck all the millionaire babies who don't think they have to follow the same rules as the rest of us but steroids where not on the banned substance list until 2002 so as it pertains to baseball anyone using was not cheating.

I'm watching for it, but I think he'll save the record breaker for a home game.

It's a video that will be played for decades. His image needs the crowd to be going crazy.

Babe Ruth was known coke head and I know that coke definitely is a performance enhancing drug so all of his stats should be deleted from the records and he should be removed from the hall of fame

I respect your opinion, and even though I disagree with it I appreciate the fact that you made it without resorting to name calling. There are some others in this thread that should take your cue.

A big part of my argument would also be your second point, where you stated the lack of specialists is Aaron's day. I honestly believe if you take both factors into consideration, as well as the fact that there were many elite pitchers in Aaron's era that suffered injuries and had to retire, whereas today they can have Tommy John surgery and gain a few MPH on their fastball, that you can say it was at minimum a wash....

Please show me where I have been an ass. I simply stated my opinion, as did you. If you believe that anything you stated is fact, other than opinion, then you must have figured out what the entire baseball establishment has not.

Fuck you dude. YOU were the one giving me a history lesson on how things were in the 80's. YOU start shit by talking to me like some 22 year old punk in here that can barely remember the early 90's. Talk about lack of respect. Want to give me a refresher on the 70's? Hey the 30th anniversary of Elvis's death is coming up. Want to tell me about that? Wait I can actually remember what I was fucking doing that day when I found out.

Wow, you certainly are an angry little fella. You are five years older than me, so stop acting like you are Yoda. If that is your idea of talking shit then you must spend your whole life yelling at the TV and anyone with a dissenting opinion.

Pitchers DO use and have been using steroids.

Steroids can help a pitcher increase their throw by around 5 mph (i know 2 minor leaguers that use steroids right now)...

More importantly than the speed / strength is the physical recovery that steroids help pitchers with. Nandrolones also lubricate joints on top of that.

To think that only hitters are using the sauce is stupid, I'm willing to bet 95% of players in professional sports use gear. When your job depends on you being better than everyone else, you make sure you are.
