I've asked this somewhere else, and the result was that "it doesn't matter"

Seriously, I toy around with text links and banner links a lot and I go with what looks better on the gallery. If the banner looks ugly on that gallery, then I'll make a simple one, or use text only. I do normally put both text and banner though.

Because you dont usually get to choose the text link and its usually a short and non-descript one, your better off using a banner recip. You'll at least identify and personalise with it.
