C6 Vette

What do you think?

Will it actually compete with the Viper?

Wouldn't count on it. Fucking Lutz wants to sell more Vettes overseas so he's making it more European

American sports car makers shouldn't try to make their cars more European - the whole point of American cars is the big engine/fast straight line speed/low cost appeal, and they do it well.

There's no way they can match Porsche/Ferrari/TVR etc, so why bother trying? All they'll do is alienate the US which is their biggest market...

My left nut can compete with the Viper. The viper reminds me of that car the ambigiously gay duo drives. The front is WAAAAAAY too long v10 or no. The Diablo crams a V12 and looks great. The corvette crams a V8 with style. Viper barely squeeses it in and in doing so looks like shit.

Compete with them? They shouldn't be trying to - it's different markets. Not to mention the fact that the Vette cost substantially less than the counterparts there. It's not a question of they can't compete with those cars, it's that they shouldn't be trying to. I'm on my second Vette now (z06) and fucking love it, but if Lutz turns the C6 into a Euro, I'll just get a Porsche or Ferrari (or a TVR if, god willing, they start selling them here).

The new look wont come out untill the 2005 model.
Gotta wait a few more years to get a hold of one. Sometime in 2004.

I love the retro 1963-1967 sting ray look they gave it.
Its overall gunna be a smaller car. YEah a bit more European like the last guy said. Not too sure if it will go over well here in the US initally. It really doesnt have that muscle look to it that Vettes in the past have had. Plus the "look" of this Vette wont really be all that unique to the public becasue Cadillac is coming out with a XLR Roadster the year before and its based on the SAME C6 architecture!! Not good!

Anyhow I love it! And cant wait till 2004 to get my hands on one if im still legally allowed to drive then.

The new Z06 already smokes the Viper, imo.

6th Generation Vette will not directly compete with the supercars mentioned, it is a refined sports car for daily driving and GM will maintain this line as they develop rwd chassis from Cadillac.

However.. that being said, the current Z06 with modification can easily hold its own against Dodge Vipers, Prosche 4WD 911Ts, Ferrari 360 Modernas and Lambo Murcielagos, in every aspect of the performance envelope, for about a $25-35,000 investment.. including a 427cid buildup (about 460 peak horse at the tires and bags of torque), beefed clutch, stock rear and minor suspension stiffening.

Why doesn't GM just put a mild LS1 underhood? Well for one, the Vette is excluded from the gas guzzler tax. GM needs to maintain a good reputation among those who already see the Vette as irresponsible and obnoxious when it comes to environmental issues. If the Vette were not in this catagory, as I said, it will hamper Cadiallac's ability to develop and introduce the Cien, which could pave the way to better things in the future.

And from what I've heard, and I'm in the automotive industry by trade, Bob Lutz, Jon Moss and Mark Reuss at GM have some great stuff planned for the next 5-10 years.. the GTO will be no slouch, the V8 CTS will make hay out of any European counterpart.. wait until 2005 or 2006 before you start to flame Bob Lutz.

With modification I can build a Mini Cooper that'll out perform every car mentioned, but that's not the point...

If all those cars were standard, which one would you choose? I wouldn't choose the 'vette...

uhhhh

First off, the Mini's weight distrobution is atrocious. To attempt to get its power to weight ratio and torque curves anywhere near that of the Vette or Viper or 911T you'd easily spend $20k on top of the $30k sticker, and you haven't even touched the suspension which is far from "race inspired."

Secondly, we're not talking "which would you choose," nay, we're talking bang for buck. The C5 with a LS1 is faster than a stock Viper at 2/3s the price, the C6 is intended to be just as quick at half the price out of the box.

The Vette is nice, I am sure plenty of em will roll off dealer lots.

Myself, I cant wait for the return of the Mach 1 from Ford in 2003. That will be huge, only downside is that it is a limited production model.

All the new vette's suck. They are plastic peices of shit that fall apart. Get a 57 or pre 80 if you want a real vette.

Haven't heard about any significant problems with the C5, the C4 maybe but not the C5. While I can't speak for the C4, I've driven C5s for almost 4 years now and have had 0 problems.
