I think youtube is seriously the way to get discovered now if you want to be a singer and get a record deal.

Already 2 people got signed/deals from clips of themselves singing on there.
Esmee Denters got singed with Justin Timberlake's label and Mia Rose got signed with Next Selection who also manages Cassie...
