Why do they give you driver CDs for Monitors and Mice?

I bought a generic USB mouse that is plug and play and it came with a bunch of install drivers. Why is that? I just plugged it in and Windows found it immediately. The same goes for P&P monitors...they give you a shit load of disks and since I've been using computers I've never had to install a driver for it.

Anyone know why they do this? Just something I found odd.

Many times the extra 37 buttons on a mouse aren't found or assignable by Windows, but in the case of a straightforward 2button scroll mouse, everything from win2k has the driver built into it.

Monitor driver disks will often let rarely-used crazy display modes be used, but are pretty damned useless, too.

Good monitors come with color profiles on CD. Installing these does make sense.
