Bad resume mistake! How to NOT get a job

So I have been advertising for an office assistant and I have never seen so many resumes for one job postings. Lot's of moms re-entering the work force and lot's of fresh high school graduates.

Here is one thing that really gets under my skin. I have at least 10 resumes now that were faxed directly from the current employer during business hours.

Why would I hire someone who looks for a new job on their employers time?

I don't care what your qualifications are anymore, this speaks to your integrity.

DISQUALIFIED!

they could be really good friends with their current employer, already put in a two week notice, and are just using the fax machine on their day off. little far fetched but not impossible.

I dont know that I'd disqualify automatically for that.. because when I needed to fax some papers in, I didnt have a machine so used the one from my old job, lol. But I also admit that I never cared much for a resume compared to an interview. Tells a million times more to just speak with someone I think. Just make that your first question!

BTW I'd take a mom re-entering the workforce any day over a fresh from school person. More motivation, experience, sense of responsibility and on and on. Kids flake so bad sometimes it's not funny.

When I have a stack of resumes to go through where most people have similar qualifications it's easy for me to weed those out. I will always assume the worst in this case.

TOTALLY agree on the mom statement. They are hungry and ready to work hard and prove themselves. Not to mention I am a bit of a man-child so I may need some mommy attention once in a while lol

That is a little over the top to me. Most people don't have a fax machine at home if they work outside of the home currently. And you are entitled to breaks at work in most cases. I can kind of see where you're coming from, but faxing a resume takes about 3 seconds, and chances are it's a local number, so it's not costing the employer there. If they are searching for a job, and compiling a resume at work, that's more questionable, IMO. But hey, your choice to disqualify as you see fit.

Sending a resume from your employer's office doesn't necessarily mean that they are doing it on their employer's time. They could be doing it before or after their work hours or even on their break. It just might be the only fax machine that they had quick access to. In a way it shows me resourcefulness., but I can understand your side of it. Personally I wouldn't hire anyone fresh out of high school. I'd go with a mom or a college graduate. Two people that need the money. Needing money = dependability.

When job searching in the past I've been told that someone who is currently working is vastly preferable to someone currently unemployed. I think a lot of employers look down on someone who is unemployed, as perhaps they were fired or quit without having a plan.
Some employers will keep employees on the books for two weeks to a month and let them come in after laying them off, so as to help them find a new job. You'd think that disloyalty would be punished, but instead resourcefulness is rewarded. You have to take into account that a lot of employees are told that on the job searches are preferable.
The worst thing is finding an employee looking for a job on gfy during company time.
