It is just not understandable to most Americans/Canadians period. I hated the game my whole life till I came to live in Spain and learned how great it was. A great read is "How Soccer Explains the World" by Franklin Foer.
"The global power of soccer might be a little hard for Americans, living in a country that views the game with the same skepticism used for the metric system and the threat of killer bees, to grasp fully. But in Europe, South America, and elsewhere, soccer is not merely a pastime but often an expression of the social, economic, political, and racial composition of the communities that host both the teams and their throngs of enthusiastic fans." |
football is passion and culture an d a way of life

Soccer is the best sport in the world. Baseball and hockey are way too boring. But growing up in norway, that is a natural opinion.

Also I question the sexuality of males who like to watch other men in shorts running around. Sounds like something a fag like Boy Alley would be into, not a heterosexual male. |
I am weird in both countries because I like baseball and I like football/soccer. In both it isn't something that I can really explain but at some point I get sucked into the drama of both games even if they aren't super fast matches. Football and baseball are both sports that have long traditions of father/son bonding that then builds into a lifelong passion not just for the sport in general but for a team in particular. Some of the best individual matches of any sport I have seen have been football matches..the drama can be intense at times.

Also the passionated fans takes the games to a higher level. The atmosphere in the stadium can be fantastic: https://youtube.com/watch?v=slM7fWu9WEg

1. Highly skilled players
2. Tactical 3. Fast paced 4. Few long interruptions 5. Beatiful 6. Exciting I hate boring sports like american football (why is it called football anyway?) and baseball. Those sports suck and do not excite me at all, and yes I do understand the rules and I have seen full games like the super bowl. I think its a matter of heritage what you prefeer. Baseball is big in many parts of the world, in the rest, football is king. |
Like i've said before, there isn't enough commercials in a game of football for americans to enjoy... :1orglaugh

The fact that you can't see beyond a game you call football, where you use your hands is proof enough that you have gotten sports all wrong. Half of the world watching the world cup final is proof that you can't see past a game that needs enough commercial breaks so you can get more popcorn, or beer that tastes like piss, selling itself as the worlds coldest beer. |

I was asking about this because I was curious what people like about the sport...you know educating myself? You're right though, it doesn't need my support...David Beckham will still make an obscene amount of money, people will still kill losing goalies and fans will still riot in the stands without my money. |

And American's liking football and baseball has nothing to do with the commercials, in fact, I think it is detrimental to the game. There are times when a pitcher is warmed up and ready to go, but he has to wait another 2 or 3 minutes because of a commercial break. It's ridiculous to me that the games are now at the mercy of the commercials. |

Why can't Soccer fans EVER explain why they love their sport without comparing it to or putting down other sports ????

american football and baseball all have overweight professionals. this appeals to the fans that watch as most of them are just average joes not in shape at all. they can relate. it's simple. makes them feel more like they're part of the game and the sport. where with soccer you have to be a finely tuned athletic machine. soccer also takes way more skill and tactics than any other sport.

Baseball: Batting Running Tactical eye Catching Turn-based action Football: Ball technique (dribbling, running with ball, heading, recieving) Passing technique Shooting technique Defense tactics Offence tactics Tackling Non-stop action based Overall to me it seems that football demands more of a player than baseball. I mean, a baseball player can be fat and still play in the high leauge. |

actually the passion with which I defend the sport I love to play and watch equals the passion with which I enjoy it. Baseball is a game that can be played by overweight porkies, and so is american football. The term athlete is applied lightly. |
