NTM, weren't you planning a trip to Japan now?
My trip got delayed for personal/biz reasons... wanted to go July/August, then planed Sepptember, but I guess mid October could be a good time. I've been just told by someone else as well that October/November is the best part to visit Japan (just like JB said in this thread) though i'm not really sure about the expected tempertures then.... ![]()

nothing like april in osaka, fuck tokyo.
go for hanami and go to tengakunomichi japanese chicks hate it if you speak japanese so just play dumb, most of them like hearing accents etc. most learn basic english so you should get by, but if you learn any japanese ... forget it, your a gaijin and it will only ever look wierd if you use japanese. You can live there for 40 years and still never get accepted as anything but a friggen tabibito (tourist). mansions are cool, but you can find some nice hotels around for 20-25 a day, depends where you want to go or live, btw they dont have ikea there as far as i know. Summer is crap... winter is good, because they girls still wear short skirts all year round regardless if its snowing. but spring is the ultimate best time to go, its the only time of year the japanese eseentially come out of their working shells during hanami youll find a lot of people hanging out in parks drinking doing all sorts of public stuff they would never do normally, go april!!! |

wow! i've learned a lot from JB and RawAlex! You guys are good.
I also have plans in going to Japan but next year maybe. But I'll be there just for visit and more on site seeing. UI have no problem with the language because I know the basics of Niponggo. I've studied even how they write so I know some Katakana, Hiragana and Kanji characters.

I go to Japan every year or so for a couple of weeks. I usually stay in Ikebukuro in Tokyo.
As Ikebukuro is a major subway/train station, you can be just about anywhere in Tokyo in 30 minutes such as Akihabara or Shinjuku. There is a great inn there called the Kimi Ryokan which is Japanese styled and foreigner friendly. Moreover, the rate for a single room is $45.00 a night. Can't beat it. http://www.kimi-ryokan.jp/ |

Japan is great, and prices have really come down. Hell it's almost as expensive here in Bangkok nowadays with the strengthening baht against the dollar/yen. My favorite hideaway there is a little enclave called 'Fukui' about an hour north of Kyoto, it's near a fishing village and the fish and seafood is like nothing I've ever experienced. Plus the people are so damn friendly and happy to see a foreigner come to their parts. Damn I can't wait to go back.

I've been to Japan a half dozen times. Everyone has always been really friendly, especially outside the major cities and even when I was with my wife (who is chinese, but every japanese person assumed she was japanese and tried to speak to her in japanese... lol).
I haven't spent any time in southern japan though.. that's my next trip. Fukuoka and below... I'd love to spend a few months in Japan, perhaps take one of those business language courses or something. |

Southern Japan is really tropical with bamboo and orange groves. I visit a little island called Shikanoshima which happend to be the focal point of the Mongol Invasion in 1280 AD at the port of Hakata. The original gold seal that was a present from the Emperor of China to the Emperor of Japan in 600 AD was recovered from a rice paddy on the island. It smells of orange blossoms.
Very historic with beautiful old temples and gardens. When I was there, I lived in an 800 year old house with a traditional Japanese family, father was sumo promoter and mother was classic koto concertist. I was 20 years old and became very Japanese in my outlook. We had the fireplace in the center of the living area and solid treetrunks holding up the corners of the room. There really is another way of living besides the USA model and it works very well. I'm still planning on retiring in the area on a part time basis at some time in the future. Sweet dreams. http://www.fukuoka-now.com/features/...fn_code=431843 |
