Going to a new university that monitors internet usage..

I used to have DSL from a 3rd party at my old university, but ive had to transfer to a new one for my final year..

however, they monitor internet usage, where i go, what i download etc..

how can i avoid detection, or stop them from seeing where i go, what i download, etc..

they wont even let me get mp3s (sigh)..

would a proxy work?

What university are you going to? That sucks. I downloaded gigs of mp3s during my freshman year. Plus tons of movies. It was great.

Looks like you'd better get a second connection independent of the university.

When I lived in the dorms napster was the craze. It was practically the only way to get mp3s. The university had the program banned and you couldn't access the internet with it. But about 5 hours after they officially banned the program some of my computer science friends wrote a crack for the program so it could work....

I would nose around to see what the computer science people are doing becuase you know they are downloading whatever they want, and nobody knows except them!

Anyway my suggestion it to use something like http://www.jokershouse.com/dexfinder.html to find indexs of music, and then when the download prompt comes up change the file name to zip or soemthing else so it doesn't appear that you are downloading an mp3. I hope this works - its only a guess!

Another thing that will protect your privacy is surfning through http://www.megaproxy.com/

I hope all of this stuff helps!

Solution: Don't surf porn sites on the public computers. No big deal. I wouldn't use the schools computer to surf porn anyways.
Sounds Bizarre that was your game plan.

Just setup an internet connection in the place your living at.

I think thats the whole point, that the Dorm itself is where the internet connections are, then his place of residence is where they have it.

Whats the name of the University that put gigabit ethernet on their campus?

My mistake. I thought he was just talking about a public computer lab on campus. I don't think porn should be surfed in this setting, but if they monitor your connection from your dorm that is just fucked up.

I recommend Freedom Websecure from www.zeroknowledge.com. Basically it allows you to build an encrypted tunnel from your workstation to their farm of proxies. The performance penalty is so nominal I am rarely ever conscious of it.
