Good processor choice, might consider more ram, I know Sony Vegas LOVES RAM and possibly another 500GB hard drive depending what youre encoding to and from. The main thing is that processor though.. wish I could afford one

i need to run Cleaner XL and Ulead Media Studio Pro, therefore i need windows xp. but i don't need to spend double of the money to buy a mac when i don't use OSX anyways

			it's 2 x 500 gb - and i have about 10 TB network storage with RAID5 Quote:

harddrive see above - and my current video pc has 4 gb, win xp just uses 3,5 anyways and after watching the taskmanager for a year i saw that there were never more than 1,5 gb ram acutally used

What's the 80GB Hard drive for if you already have the 500GBs? Are the 2 500GB Hard Drives striped (RAID)? Agree with Zoose, more RAM is definitely a plus. There are plenty of SATA ports on that motherboard, could consider adding a Raptor drive array. Should boost the performance quite a bit

You should only use SCSI disk for video-editing machines if you ask me. The rest is good stuff.

One controller with two channels. - one diskset for OS and program (some editing systems still cant handle to run on different set than OS) - one diskset for the media you are working on. And then you use your TB storage for storage only, unless its a SCSI storage, then you can have the media you are working on there as well

You've got a good computer there.

The small 80gb harddrive is good for storing your apps so they open and close quickly. And as for RAM... you don't really need more than 2gb of DDR RAM in my opinion. Most editing programs don't recognize more than 2gb right now anyhow (i.e Premiere, After Effects, etc.) Is your 80gb at 10 000 RPM?

Regarding the ram. If you decide to run a 64bit Windows, get more. Otherwise you don't need it. The 32bit OS can only handle 2gb parts at the time, so you really don't need more since it wont make bottlenecks. The 32bit drivers are written to handle that. But if you decide to go with a 64bit windows, it will be a problem since it will try to load the whole file at once. It will run out of space and start using swap-file. That can mean frame loss when encoding

the way a scsi disk and sata disk preform are very different. Its a big difference in sustainable diskwrite. But the noice can be a problem in some case for sure

That, and add the fact that last time I checked (6 months ago-ish), most editing progs had serious problems with 64bit Windows.... so the extra RAM really does come in useless unless you manage to config your system with the right software just to use the extra RAM

Ulead ?? WTF .. if your gonna get a nice pc put in a real time card .. like a matrox RTX100 or RTX.2 .. even a pinicale will do .. Imagine real time editing, desolves, fades (what ever) real time graphix, real time Color correction the list goes on and on ... With the rtx.2 you can even color correct before you capture! ... This will change the way you edit.

RTX100 or RTX.2 requiere a different motherboard, since the one listed is not certified. Or at least wasent 4 months ago when I shipped my last ever videoediting mashine (thank God - FU matrox for all the bugs with Combustion) When you want to go realtime, it cost, since everything else will have to be scaled up as well.

dont think any PC editing software supported Boardsets make 64bit drivers yet, But its close to 6 months now since I looked at it. Im not doing that stuff anymore since my last client stop selling those systems. But Since he will not buy a boardset he will use the CPU as rending power, and CleanerXL supports 64bit (or at least that was what they said they would do when i stopped) I could be wrong

Screw real time editing... too buggy and costly for a little luxury.

Forget 64bit try a 10 000rpm harddrive. The rest is perfect setup for editing. End of thread.

i'll spend you a beer when i see you ![]() but: ulead actually does realtime preview without additonal hardware - if the machine is fast enough - even with hdv sources. and we don't do much editing, just putting the parts of a clip together. and ulead media studio pro is so easy to use, i was able to explain it even to a japanese girl with nearly no computer knowledge. try that with Premiere ![]()

Nice fast processor. I personally have no problem editing hdv daily without any real time capture cards, just a $10 firewire card connected to multiple regular 7200 rpm hdds on a standard E6600 2.4Ghz Core2Duo with 4Mb L2 cache. Premiere Pro with the Aspect HD plugin has a lot of real time effects for normally used stuff like dissolves.
