Let me sum it up real quick. Any Aussie who can correct me please do so.
In this hood somewhere in Sydney where a big group of Aboriginals live they now have banned alcohol and porn. After crying for a long time they got full power over their own community a few years ago resulting in massive drug and alcohol abuse, child prostitution and a huge increase in child abuse. Like really sickening numbers. So now the Australian government takes control over them again and the Aboriginal community responds by calling it racism.

I saw it on tv lastnight i am pretty sure it was some outback country , the abos get what they want.. they can even go to college and not have to pay nothing , they get extra benefits , everything is so easy for them but they choose to sit around and get high of petrol and drunk.

Well your Governments sentiments might be in the right place but a don't really think that the've thought through the practicalities of this very much.

And another point that springs to mind is that with a blanket booze ban on all Abo's for the reasons given it smacks of racial stereotyping unless your Government has evidence to show that all your countries Abo's are alchohol abusers.

so a kid who has been born into this lifestyle should just one day get up and say 'right, now i'm going to go and be apart of civilized society'? where exactly did you read that aboriginals (not abo's - shows some respect) can go to college free? Most of them don't have access to primary & secondary education. how are they going to take advantage of those oh so generous free places in colleges?

we made this so by throwing money at a 'problem' that we didn't want to invest any energy into and now we are paying for it with a bunch of communities all over the country that live partly their old culture, partly the one we've 'bought' them and partly one that's been created from alcohol & violence. we confused their culture, and its going to take the current extreme measures PLUS several generations for there to be a solution that gives them the rights and opportunities of human beings and the ability to accept & use those opportunities to improve their lives.

the particular community that is being taken over is in the northern territory, its an aboriginal reserve near the base of Ayers Rock & is entirely self sufficient & a long distance from any towns.

the choice of location is something to do with the law where federal government can't take over in the 'states' but can in a 'territory', which is why they didn't do this in WA, NSW, QLD or any of the other places the same things are occuring.

The government have just announced they are sending in federal police to govern 1 particular town which is being used as an example situation to 'resolve the problem of drinking & sexual abuse in aboriginal communities'. They are banning alcohol, withholding welfare payments, compulsory health checks for children & if children don't go to school parents don't get full welfare payments.

Its fairly controversial down here at the moment & I guess is comparable with some of the same mistakes made in america with the native indian population or any other country where white people push out natives.

As much as you hear rags to riches stories, they don't come out of these households. It's not simply "poor".. it's worse than that.. You laughably imagine yourself as one of those kids and how you'd easily get out of the cycle - as if you would be the same person you are now if you grew up with loser parents that didn't value education or had a single adult work in the last 3 generations. You'd grow up exactly like them.. mugging guys down at the supermarket and calling everyone JC's and white cunts.

The reality is they do have it harder than most people.. as do the very lowest rung of whites. It goes beyond what opportunities they actually have.. and more what is possible given how fucked up their home situation is in terms of generating a kid thats going to go to law school or become a doctor.

That said I do live in a country town and I'm not particularly bleeding heart about this.. just a realist. We have "black out" nights here where whites don't go out because the aboriginals are having football matches or big get togethers and you're likely to get mugged or just the shit kicked out of you if a group of them find you on the street late at night. Hell doesn't even need that.. one of my employee's brothers was mugged on the weekend by three of them. Regarding these measures... if it helps at all then good. But I doubt there is any magic bullet for the problem. Except the whole stolen generation solution. Which in a really cold sense probably worked well for the socioeconomic outcomes of each child invovled even though we all know how that turned out.

The reality is that the upper class white sees both the working class white and the unemployed aboriginal in the same light... they may as well be the same race. Just look at all the AB class people on the ABC laughing at, not with Kath and Kim (yeah I know its on commercial tv now.).
But people would be better off worrying about how to make the best of their own situation and get ahead with what's available to them, even if it's just their wits.. than be controlled and wedged on issues about racial equality.

Haven't really got a view on this issue, don't have very much to do with aboriginals ever. Friends that lived in communitiys that have large aboriginal populations seem to feel that a bullet is too good for most

Within less than 12 months almost every house was completely trashed. A hard line stance is perhaps needed, but let us hope they stick at it and are serious about making significant progress, rather than pushing it under the rug or using it to get a few votes before the elections.

My dad is a plumber.. they were doing work out on one of the communities and one of the guys had massive holes in all his walls that looked like they were just kicked or hacked in with a hammer.. They asked what they were for and he said "They my TV holes" so he could watch tv from the kitchen and bedroom.. ;)

I do support the tying of welfare payments to the school attendence of children and health checks etc. But I support that for all Australians not just aboriginals. I don't think the concept as a whole is bad it just probably needs a lot more work than a rabbit-out-of-a-hat election ploy.

Ok guys, I lived in Darwin for 11 years before moving to Europe and I can honestly say I have met some good well educated aboriginals?and this is not having a go at them, it was only 3. To add to it further they were NOT taken to a settlement in the middle of nowhere by the government, the fact is the communities in the outback of NT were created by the tribes by saying they wanted to go back to their Sacred land and when a tribe had no Sacred land they simply told the NT government that particular area in Arnhem land is our Sacred land that belonged to our ancestors and they settled there.

I was born in Tasmania (state of Australia) where we don?t have an aboriginal problem because there are none there.
