Is anyone here allergic to wheat/have celiac disease?

I'm pretty sure that I am, haven't gone to the doctor for testing yet but I was wondering if anyone here follows the strict diet that it requires to avoid the symptoms and further complications?

I've been reading a lot about it and was wondering how the food substitutes are?... i.e. the baked goods made with alternative grains and etc.

I'm really not looking forward to this I'm mostly italian and going without my usual pasta and breads will be a nightmare

The bread is OK but not as nice as wheat bread. The pasta is actually very good and not that different from wheat pasta. I'm happy to chat more on icq if you want.

That's sort of what I figured. From what I read, its very common... I hope more food manufacturers will get on the ball.

My ICQ is 160370494, I appreciate your input

One guy I work very close with, got it. Pretty serious stuff. Gotta keep his diet 100%! If not, his stomache will be set back 100 days

I know someone with celiac. She does pretty well. There are actually a lot of restaurants that have substitutes if you ask.

my gf recently found out she had IBS (well, she finally went to docotos after being bloated for 2 years solid)

They said its usually caused by wheat, so we both started a wheat free diet together, and I can honestly say its awful!!!

Eating out is almost impossible. Substitues (i.e. wheat free bread, cookies etc) not only taste horrible but are twice as expensive.

After finding www.wheat-free.org I now bake all our own breads and other stuff. It's actually better, as I don't think our shopping contains a single 'processed' food

Bad thing that we can't get over yet, all meat needs to be straight cuts from the butchers (no suasages, burgers etc) which for 2 people at university, proves a little pricey

Ugh Have you ordered anything online? I was looking at http://www.celiac.com/catalog/ It seems to have a large assortment of gluten free products... I'll assume they taste terrible lol.

I need to go to the doctor to find out for sure but I'm really not looking forward to it. Sigh...

Yeah, I'm allergic to wheat (not as severe as Celiacs, though) and have spastic colitis, which is triggered by most delicious foods, haha. It's been tough, but there are definitely ways around it...ICQ me if you want some eating tips!

I've got Celiac, and other intolerances as well - icq me if you want to chat, i know lots of good resources, restaurants, cooking tips - lots of info.

For the past year I've been traveling to most of the shows and was nervous I'd never be able to eat, but it gets easier once you learn what to looks out for.

Good luck!!

My icq is 298547101
