Who here has an herb garden?

I hate having to buy herbs from outside sources. Anyone here have their own herb garden?

So far just 6 small herb plants. About 2 to 3 weeks old, and about 3"s high. I wish they would grow faster. Anyone have any particular tricks they use to help speed up herb grow? These are currently outside herbs.

Several.

I have many outdoors hidden amongst the ornamentals, an herb area in the garden, and one in my window, and well some elsewhere like creeping thyme on paths etc.

All are edible but some are for fragrance when people walk past, on, etc.

You started a little too late in the season for most locations. Where do you live? Are they getting full sun?

I'm not talking about basil.

Know any methods to get tomatoes to set fruit when it gets over 100 degrees? Mine have quit in the last few weeks.

Getting plenty of sun. So much sun right now I cant keep the grass green. I moved them to a place they get partial shade. Im in TN. I used a mix of potting soil with a bit of sand mixed in. I water them once in the morning and once in the evening around 10pm. I use a misting bottle so the water is put on them evenly. They get sun from probably 6 or 7am till 8 or 9pm. Herb type Ill leave to imagination...

I like to cook and bake. I find the fresher the herb the better. No good produce stores around here.

Mine have had tomatoes for about three weeks but since it's gotten hot they don't set fruit the blooms just kind of burn and dry up.

Yeah, they are going to need way more nutrients than a commercial potting mix will provide. Other than that it just sounds like you need patience.

geographicly i wouldn't place you in exactly what i'd consider prime outdoor growing area. you'd probably yield better in a cabinet under cfl s. if you have an extra closet available, go hard.....

I'm in CA and I am also 100 percent legal so I could give a rats ass about posting it on a message board. I was being dense and actually thought he meant real herbs.

Add in real nutrients, worm castings, fish emulsion, blood meal, bone meal, etc. Avoid man made chemical fertilizers, stick with natural chemicals.
Get a hold of some fresh compost and mulch the plants with that, if you can not find worm castings in bulk. Add a layer of straw under that, and then spike in a garbage can sized circle of Mylar around the plant. (leave room in center for stem and to water).
Make sure they are in full sun.
If they are in containers, unless they are like 50 gallon trash bags, put them in the actual ground after you amend the soil. Do so during a cool evening.
Water every so often and not every single day, let the roots dry out some so they will dig deeper and you will have a more healthy plant.
Every so often supplement with a tea either for growth or bloom, I'm sure you know which NPK each is for.
Watch early for males and kill them.
Watch out for thieves come near harvest time.

Most herbs can grow nicely in small pots inside too.. But some ideas for growth.. make sure that the soil around them isn't too tightly packed, it allows more nutrients to the roots to make sure the earth is penetrable. I'd suggest getting some miracle gro.. that stuff is amazing.. but small amounts, and never water with it in the daytime, the sun will burn your herbs.. Evenings or very early morning waterings. Depending on the herb, some of them like more sandy, dry conditions, make sure you are planting herbs for optimal growing conditions.

If you don't want to use miracle grow, brew up some plain tea with the leaves etc all (break open the tea bag) and then let it steep until the water is room temperature.. you can then feed the plants with the tea (leaves and all).

My mint and oregano are over 2' tall right now. My garlic chives are full and fluffy and my rosemary is a happy little bush. My sweet basil didn't like the soil though and gave up the ghost last month. sigh.
