Maybe it's about expectation. You can see the flaws of the apple, if the core is rotten you're not surprised, and you've been told not to take it anyway. Perhaps it's the temptation of finding an incredibly sweet apple underneath. The perfect apple loses some of it's appeal because it's just the way it looks, there's no depth. Speaking of depth, I think I've gone deep enough ;)
