The torrents site got ads linking directly to the codec sales stealing trojans now...

Not sure if this link will work :

http://www.torrentspy.com/search.asp...ey=08913896895

But to the right I see several "play video" ads which links directly to fake galleries with the codec trojan

With the size of these torrent sites got today I'd say we have less than 12 months left before paid gallery spots wont be worth it due to stolen traffic

So... if the same patterns goes for the rest of the programs, which I can't see any reason why it shouldn't, the trojan guys could very well be the biggest overall affiliates in the adult business today.. I wouldn't be surprised if these guys are doing 1000+ sales a day overall

If you have a firm understanding of exactly what the codec trojans do I'd love to hear more so we can figure out a way to protect our honest affiliates, hit me up if you'd like to help me build a better understanding.

Well, I've seen'em work in two ways...

1) They detect when a surfers hits the tour of a paysite, and even before the the surfers browser loads the tour they replace the ID with their ID = stolen sale

2) They redirect the traffic to their network of sites.. (TGPs etc)

So.. they are stealing sales now, and building up traffic for the long term... so when there's not affiliate traffic left to be stolen they have huge site networks on their own.. and they will be the only affiliates left (more or less ;) )

I'm afraid the only way this can be killed (and it needs to be done soon, VERY soon) is by getting MS to include protection in a windows update

Okay, the first one I think I have a solution for already, the second however I'm not sure how to combat against. Definitely dirty pool

I'm not finding any links to a codec install page. Do you have a direct link to one so that I can infect myself and do a little investigating?

Very true.

Educating surfers is nice, but these trojans are hard to remove and it's expecially newbie surfers who get lured into installing them...they know shit about security and are happy to know how to write a letter in word and run IE.

Programs owners can help solving the problem, too. It's not like they'll get less sales if they cancel the accounts in question, because these signups are generated by honest affiliates that get fucked anyway. The trojan guys don't ever send a single signup, all they send is heaps of worthless traffic to make the stolen sales look legit.

"Security Messenger"
"Browser Protection Volume"

The descriptions of those two are just hillarious.. LMAO

Ive terminated a few of these installers on our system and Im glad to say they were not on our top affiliate list by far. Hope it stays this way.

I know that a big part of the stolen sales still carry the original refering URL.. so if programs extended their system to check out which domain sent the sales and match it against a list of domains each webmaster adds to a database and determine who owns the sale that way - alot of the stolen sales attempts would fail

the most peers i've ever seen downloading a torrent was like 20,000

that means you guys are way overestimating the # of people visiting torrent sites

i've met maybe 3 people in real life (say a bar) that have torrent installed

so i think your being a little "off-the-wall" with the gallery traffic not being worth it in a few months

cuz gallery traffic hasn't been worth shit in years

Yeah, but those 20.000 simultanious downloads.. so it's many people added all the time along with people stopping their downloads...

the problem is that its not JUST torrent sites. these people are hitting every forum on earth it seems. not to mention the myspace spam.

theyre covering way more bases than just torrent traffic.

If someone is under 25, they almost certainly have some sort of torrent software on their machine. Limewire has been very popular around here. My friends at the university level are about 100% torrent capable, and some of them I am sure even seed stuff.

As SERPS geting more and more full of torrent sites, more and more of the public are exposed. If they don't have the software to download, they might randomly click around, and woops, they get a codec spyware install. Either way, the sale is lost (at least for the affiliates).

Do these toolbars steal ALL sales or are they sneaky and steal like 1 in every 3 sales or similar?

I've refreshed a few times and can't see any ads that link direct to codec sites. Which ad is it?

If you are talking about ads on torrent sites that link to sites that link to codecs or whatever that is a different story as most adult sponsors good or bad, are one step removed from torrents at the most

Right, at the moment they are covering: Several torrent sites, huge TGP networks, Google search results (mostly via parasite .edu hosting), some tube style portals, myspace, social bookmarking sites (using standard scripts like scuttle) and many surfer forums.

I'd go as far as: They got a major percentage of all adult traffic covered, maybe not short term, but sooner or later Joe Newbie Surfer will hit one of their sites.

Their strategy, especially for TGP traffic, is very clever. You'll rarely see them linked directly from legit TGPs. They build a satellite network of normal TGPs trading with your sites and direct some of the traffic to their trojan sites, so never forget to pay attention to the trades or your trades !

All of this is just another reason why sponsors should be staying away from torrent sites. They don't have a problem sending surfers off to get slaughtered by the toolbar fuckers. The signs should be clear.

Programme owners should suspend any suspicious accounts they think are a result of spyware, you want to know why??

Because eventually affiliates like me will just give up once they see it isn't worth it. And believe me, it is getting very close to the stage where it isn't worth it.

Once more and more affiliates give up, paysite owners will start to hurt from lost traffic.

So paysite owners, suspend those accounts!

Jaeger, more and more affiliates seem to be streaming away from the established programs and appear to be heading to more marginal programs just because those programs give better returns. Many people think it is a question of over exposure, but I think it is more a question of what is targetted by spyware and toobars and what isn't.

My best conversions come from small programs that most people don't promote - and I have never seen those sites on torrent sites, and I have never seen them with fake codec sites ranking high for thier terms in google.
