London 2012: big fucking joke

New brand launches

London 2012's new brand and vision were launched today by Sebastian Coe and London 2012 ambassadors.
The new Olympic emblem is based on the number 2012 - the year the Games take place and includes the Olympic Rings and the word London.
For the first time the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games emblems have been based on the same core shape.
Available in four colours ? pink, blue, green and orange - the new emblem is modern and will be dynamic, evolving in the years between now and 2012.
It symbolises the Olympic spirit and the ability of the Games to inspire people to take part - not just as spectators, but as volunteers, in the Cultural Olympiad and more.
Launching the brand at the Roundhouse in North London, London 2012 Chair Seb Coe said: "London 2012 will be 'Everyone's Games', everyone's 2012. This is the vision at the very heart of our brand.
"It will define the venues we build and the Games we hold and act as a reminder of our promise to use the Olympic spirit to inspire everyone and reach out to young people around the world.
"It is an invitation to take part and be involved."

I smell a repeat of:

According to the UK National Audit Office, the total cost of the Millennium Dome at the liquidation of the New Millennium Experience Company in 2002 was £789 million, of which £628 million was covered by National Lottery grants and £189 million through sales of tickets etc.

$1,570,452,216 (give and take the odd dollar) for an empty building. Geez.

It is dumb but then I don't particularly remember any Olympics logo from the past. Where it really is going to get fun is when they pick a mascot...lets all hope they pic a chav.

You know, anybody that lives in the area of the Dome knows what it has done for that area. When I moved here it was a wasteland and now it is a huge retail area mixed with not-cheap housing and and transport links. I bet it has brought back way more into the economy through taxes paid from those that own buisness and homes in that area - not to mention the taxes spent in the shops and restaurants there.

A poll by the BBC News website asked readers to give it a gold, silver or bronze medal, or a wooden spoon if they really didn't like it. Eighty three percent gave it a wooden spoon.

The IOC charman seems to like it alot.

Commenting on the new logo, Mr Oswald said: "I love it. It's very simple. We have a fantastic logo, it's very creative, very young and very dynamic. I'm very enthusiastic about it."
