Ethenol
So I was watching a program on CNN,
75% of the cars in brazil run on Ethenol which they produce themselves. Cheap! Brazil is completely self suffecient when it comes to Fuel. Why are we not adapting this instead of the entire country bitching about gas prices???? ![]() |

First of all even if we used all farmland for growing corn and all that corn was used for ethanol we still would have enough to fuel our needs. Second, every ear of corn used for fuel is one not being used for FOOD. Thus the cost of food goes up. And not just corn on the cob or canned corn. Many foods have corn in it. All animals we eat are fed corn based feed. So the cost of meat will go up. Until something other than corn can be cheaply made into ethanol, ethanol is a fool's dream. Brazil uses 10% the oil we do. Landwise they are the same size as the US so of course they could supply their countries needs with ethenol easier. |

- first ethanol is less energetic as fuel (because of an atom of oyxgen ![]() - seconds the technology has been developped by brasilian some thank to them you won't have to spent so much money in researches ![]() on new motor. - third point: american gas companies are powerful, so why rush ? - fourth point: you have to change a park of car and a park of gas stations - fifth point: and the main one. Brasil can produce ethanol easily, because it is a sunny country with an tropical and equetorial climate. How can United states produces ethanol ? Using corn ? it requires too much water to produce imo. sugar beet ? probably less, but monoculture (and you will need a lot of sugar to produce alcohol) is not very good. Also you have to reach a industrial scale that can equal to consomption of oil for car. So good luck - sixth point: there is way to produce hydrocarbon from water and coal using fisher and tropsch reaction, it is a pretty old process. So why using alcohol and not keep the same motors. - 7th point: you need then to produce alcohol from sugar and you need to purify this alcohol and it cost money. More than using the current oil. |

And you don't mind the work of filtering it, most restaurants will give you their old oil for FREE. It saves them money since they have to pay to dispose of it. |

yes but here (in france the country of freedom) it is illegal to do that like a lot of other things because you have to pay taxes to use something for cars. |

Keep in mind they do not use corn either, they use sugar which produces a higher fuel ratio.
Our whole corn aspect is lobby based and has bad side consequences.

Yep trying to get that Iowa vote. A candidate that says he's against corn based alcohol is one that won't get elected. Unfortuneately the electorate is so stupid they don't realize that saving a few cents gallon on gas won't be anything compared to the increase in their grocery bills.
