Aussies no longer the most friendly!

CANADA has ousted Australia as the world's friendliest nation and -- to rub it in -- China has knocked us out of the top 10 index that rates a nation's brand name value.

The Anholt Nations Brand Index poll has found Canadians have overtaken Australians as the world's friendliest people, after interviewing 25,000 people in 35 developed and developing countries.

Australia also was bumped down two places in the brand name valuation index, from ninth to 11th, as China made its debut in the top 10.

But Australia managed to hold down the top spot as a holiday destination "if money was no object" and ranks as the country richest in natural beauty, closely followed by New Zealand.

NBI creator Simon Anholt said the poll, taken quarterly, highlighted how each nation was viewed by the rest of the world, reflecting aspects of trade, tourism and immigration.

"Although Australia may have slipped from being seen as the world's friendliest nation, its reputation has improved in exports, governance and culture," Mr Anholt said.

"Although global public opinion may not see the Aussies saying 'G'day' quite as much as before, there is a growing awareness of the country's booming economy, and the world is perhaps starting to take Australia a little more seriously."

Australia has dropped one place to sixth in overall tourism popularity, which is headed by Italy, France and Spain.

You sound like two swedish girls I met in argentina. They didn't like Australia because apparently the food was *shit*. When asked what they ate - pies and chips from the service station up the road from their hostel

Australia has some of the world's finest beaches, some of the finest sea food, beef, and produce, gorgeous babes, etc .... cleanest air and water in the world (Cape Grim, Tasmania)

lots of natural beauty, and plenty of night life ... if you get bored then you must be boring!

I am Australian.

Like I said, its a nice country but its dull. It's as cosmopolitan as bangers and mash. London, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Prague are exciting places, and not just because of the nightlife but because of the art, culture and history. Australia is a cultural wasteland.... but a nice place to live all the same.

And just to expand a little. I also don't like the way this country is headed.

Australians are becoming arrogant, apathetic (we've always been apathetic though), overly materialistic, self-obsessed mindless little nationalists with an overwhelming sense of entitlement. We need to wake up to ourselves and learn to take and accept criticism instead of getting all pissy, pre-menstrual and defensive.

That's a bit harsh mate, Melbourne is pretty cultural these days. Food, arts, nightlife, etc. But if your not a happy camper you can always bugger off, nobody is forcing you to live here.

Australians are apathetic, but then again, Australians have never really had their lifestyle challenged, so they just don't give a fuck.

Maybe we're about to see a change. Johnnie touched a very raw nerve when he set about changing the industrial landscape and Australians aren't quite as apathetic as they once were.

Climate change is also having an affect on Australians - I can't remember ever seeing so much talk on TV across Australia about conserving water before and I've been through a few droughts in different parts of the country over the years.

Yep, the old predictable 'love it or leave it' bullshit. The sad reality is that most Australians (like most Americans) are simply incapable of dealing with any criticism of their own country in a mature way. They act like spoilt little petulant brats.

This thread is a testament to that.

And all I said is that Australia is boring. Which, mostly, it is.... IMO.

We certainly eat kangaroo - you can buy the meat in most supermarkets along with wallaby and emu but I don't think I'd fancy trying to eat koala.
