I just lost my best friend of 14 years

I lost my best friend this morning, my dog Kerouac.
This dog was part of a family legacy, we lost the last in his line, his daughter earlier this year. He came from a long line of pups that my mother began breeding over 20 years go.

I knew that at his age it could be any day, but last night he began to have trouble breathing, and I was up with him all night.

I'm pretty sure he suffered a heart attack around 4:30 this morning, and he died in my arms a little while later.

I knew that if he made it through the night, that he would more than likely would have to be put down today.
I sure will miss the little character.

My condolences. This may be a little corny but I hope this helps a little...loss is a terrible thing indeed!

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Author unknown.

I know exactly how you feel. Losing a furry friend is just as heart breaking as losing a real family member. I'm sure he is happy where he is now, and he will be waiting for your reunion.

Thanks everyone. I took him to be cremated this morning, spent the day with some family, but eventually I had to face coming back home knowing he would not be at the door to greet me as he has done for more than a 1/3 of my life.

This was not the first dog I have ever had, but he was MY first dog. The first dog that I as an adult out in the world on my own, picked out and was all mine, and not a family dog.

I knew his passing would be a tough one for me, I haven't cried this much since my mom died. Amazing how such a little animal could have such an effect on you.

A friend of mine had to have her lab put down last week, it had cancer and there wasn't much more to do. The oncologist came out to their house in the middle of the night and took care of it for them.

I don't know what I'd do without my dogs, they are just as much a part of the family as people are... my Jack Russell will be 12 this year, and I wonder where the years went sometimes.

Our ferret died last night. He was 8 or 9, which is ancient for a ferret. I'm still pretty damn upset about it and on the edge of tears... again.

I so here you man, and I'm sorry for your loss. I'm on the verge of going through this myself, here's my story.... http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=736905

Some might say "it's just a dog", but not everyone understands all the time spent together with your pooch, the walks, tossing stuff for him to fetch, the special moments when you were sick and he came to you and stuck by you etc. Those times he did stuff that made you laugh like crazy, the times he stuck his snoot up some unsuspecting girlfriend's skirt, etc..... and on and on the memories go.

It's going to take time to get over the loss of a friend like that.

All the best to you man.

I know my time to go through this is only a few months away, if that.
