how do you keep your employees off myspace?

I have a secretary in the other room. I'm not paying her a lot of money, but I'm not paying her to fuck around on myspace... which she is obviously doing since her myspace account shows her online and it's an hour after lunch ended.

block it on your router. Even the cheap linksys boxes allow to block certain sites.

Walk up to her slap your dick around her face and say MySpace sucks, instead of wasting your time on it go to gfy.com post 100 times a hour then whore your sig out and give me the money.

Should do it.

You can set up the computer to block the website, it's in security settings

YTCracker has a post on his blog on how to do it:

http://ytcracker.com/

here is the command to block myspace using iptables:

iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -d 216.178.32.0/20 -j DROP

what I'd love to do, actually, is just block it from 8-12, then from 1-5. Is there software that does something like that?

Forward any request to myspace.com to something fucking nasty. You can edit the host file in windows or configure your router(depending on your router). I bet she'll think twice about going to any myspace page if you forward it to something really nasty.

Not a bad idea, but when she gets off the clock, my son usually plays on the computer. He goes to myspace too.

It's not necessarily myspace I'm looking to tackle - it's any site that doesn't have to do with her actual research. mtv.com, myspace, etc.

If it bothers you, let her know if bothers you, and she should limit her time on the page to breaks and such.

If she continues and disregards your sentiments, take all steps you consider appropriate - being sure to clue her in on the severity of the issue, and then ultimately, find a replacement for her.

Blocking sites, etc, only hurts morale in my experience - and that has a tendency to backfire in many different ways.

Well if you wanted to be able to disable it quickly I guess you would need software. Maybe something like Net Nanny?

Have your router intercept the request and send it to a "You're Fired!" page.

Don't be a passive aggressive vagina head...

You chose to be the boss, ask her to stay off myspace, easy.

Also, you're trusting myspaces "online now" a bit too much. If she left the window open or even a bit after that it still says shes online.

I ran across a neat little thing yesterday while i was researching this - "Little Brother". I didn't understand exactly how to install it though. :P

It would be cool to be able to graph exactly how unproductive an employee is when they "check their email" or "just say hi real quick to a friend" - and then deduct from their paycheck accordingly.

YUP! Communicate and tell her how you feel about it. If she doesn't cut the crap off while she is working, then fire her.

Of course it might also mean you aren't keeping her busy enough!

Actually there there is. I forget the name but its marketed for parents trying to block "fun" sites during homework hours. You could easily use it for work hours instead.

And if you know anything about MySpace you'll know that for hours and hours after someone has closed the browser, a massive percentage of time, MySpace shows them as online.

Don't go accusing her of anything til you know hard fact. Check it out first.

Mind you. Is she writing the letters you need done? Is she answering the phone calls? Is she organising the day appropriately?

Yes?

So let her use MySpace then. It's not like she's got fuck all else to do, and she's not your dogs body, so you can't exactly have her start cleaning your boots coz she's done all her work.

Jeez.

its very simple

tell her she wasent hired to surf myspace, and if that is what she wants to do, you understand, but will have to let her go.

Well ... I think that would show a lack of respect for your employees as skilled or talented workers.

Better to find out if they really are browsing MySpace during work time. Because as both myself and Gator stated, MySpace doesn't log you off when you close your browser every time ...

Remember that.
