North American Currency: The Amero

With the Canadian dollar closing in on the US dollar I think it will be sooner than later that we'll be using the Amero as our common currency.

If Mexico was more like Canada, I'd say maybe..... but do Canadians and Americans really want the value of their money dependant in part on a failed country like Mexico?

You have any idea of the expense required to implement such a thing?

Combine that with the idea that while Canadian webmasters might find this to be a great idea, I highly doubt you could find 10 Americans that would think it would be a good idea.

What would be the advantage of the US implementing such a system with Canada?

The advantages would be similar to the Euro but more important, the US would benefit in terms of greater economic efficiency and stability.

US scientists and engineer use the metric system in their day to day job, and most educated Americans are very familar with it.

First I've heard of it.

I think you are out of your mind, personally, if you think this is "going to happen".

If it were going to happen I'm quite certain I'd have read about it somewhere other than here. :D

We are in the middle of a change to one AU or NAU. But with that said, fuck nafta, and fuck joining with mexico. The US just wants more serfs.

IF Canada knew what is good for them they will stay far away from the US if the US relations with Mexico keep going like they are now.

Didn?t we learn anything from the oil companies joining? Bigger is not better. The US politicians really don?t want to join with Canada, you are too expensive. We like our serfs poor and undereducated.

Yeah? maybe if they actually lived in the European union for a while they'd see it's not such a great idea, it's like living with your fucking crazy in-laws (and that's just the French)

Fat chance Alex.... there is no reason on the face of the planet why Canada should want to align their currency with the US under the present climate. It's like the US trying to marry up Mexican peso's and form a common currency.

similar to the euro? you mean advantages like the german marks which was once one of the worlds most stable currencies disappearing and throwing their economy into a tailspin... to the point that a decade later the debate rages on over abandoning it? you mean like the same benefits that england and many more of the EU countries are trying to avoid by not implementing the euro?

there is no benefit to Canada and no benefit to the US. we are not talking about 40 different economies that have significant difficulties in doing business together.

World finances revolve around the US dollar. So a north american currency will never happen.. However.. IF.. and it's a huge if... the Euro is able to topple the US dollar dominance.. then and only then would it become something the US might want to do..

Big business and the government didn't have the type of propoganda machines they do today. But yes, it wouldn't happen in our lifetimes and I did put a major "IF" in my original statement.. The world wouldn't be the same place it is today if it came true...

So you're assuming the ever evolving and changing currency exchange rates are just going to suddenly stop and remain constant once they equal each other, so there's "no reason to have two currencies"??

Searching Google for "the amero" brings up a collection of wing-nuts and cranks that would do the unibomber proud. Basically, they took a joint statement from a 2005 meeting between the US, Canada, and Mexico, and extended it exponentially to get to a common currency.

Since that meeting, 2 of the three heads of state have changed, and given another 18 months, the third one will thankfully be gone.

You are much more likely to see the mexican peso hard pegging in value to the US dollar than you are to see an actual common currency. Canadians wouldn't go for it.

The US dollar is still what almost every country uses as it's reserve, pegs its currency at etc. You can't understand how important it is in the world economy. Every time we rise or fall (our dollar value) nations cringe. Look at China, with almost 2 trillion in US reserves.

Nixon was a genius convincing the rest of the world to change from Gold reserves. The US can't afford to live the way it does and operate the way it does without that system, we will never adopt a currency with canada unless canada becomes part of the US. Canada may peg to the US dollar. Many countries have already tried doing so. But it does not work for anyone but us because no one is holding their debt.

We are the most advanced banking system in the world.
