Retards of the Weak...

I'm not saying that this film should have been shown in class, but give me a break. Suing the school board is only going make more kids suffer. Not to mention, how much emotional trauma could she have possibly endured? Can't say I have seen the movie in question, but I can't imagine that it's any worse than most of the movies aimed at a "teen" audience these days. Hell, Disney movies have been questioning sexuality since day one.

Anyways, here's the story...

CHICAGO --A girl and her grandparents have sued the Chicago Board of Education, alleging that a substitute teacher showed the R-rated film "Brokeback Mountain" in class.

The lawsuit claims that Jessica Turner, 12, suffered psychological distress after viewing the movie in her 8th grade class at Ashburn Community Elementary School last year.

The film, which won three Oscars, depicts two cowboys who conceal their homosexual affair.

Turner and her grandparents, Kenneth and LaVerne Richardson, are seeking around $500,000 in damages.

"It is very important to me that my children not be exposed to this," said Kenneth Richardson, Turner's guardian. "The teacher knew she was not supposed to do this."

According to the lawsuit filed Friday in Cook County Circuit Court, the video was shown without permission from the students' parents and guardians.

The lawsuit also names Ashburn Principal Jewel Diaz and a substitute teacher, referred to as "Ms. Buford."

The substitute asked a student to shut the classroom door at the West Side school, saying: "What happens in Ms. Buford's class stays in Ms. Buford's class," according to the lawsuit.

Richardson said his granddaughter was traumatized by the movie and had to undergo psychological treatment and counseling.

In 2005, Richardson complained to school administrators about reading material that he said included curse words.

"This was the last straw," he said. "I feel the lawsuit was necessary because of the warning I had already given them on the literature they were giving out to children to read. I told them it was against our faith."

Messages left over the weekend with CPS officials were not immediately returned.

it's sort of ironic that you spelled "week" wrong in your thread title, hehe.

I would object to that too if I was the parent. The fact is that it's an R rated movie. Not suitable without parent or guardian. A teacher or substitute teacher is not a legal guardian last I knew. This was a 12 year old dont forget.

Yeah... the guy (the grandparent) is totally within his rights. Can't say I'd agree with his politics, but he's right.

The only retard in that story is the substitute teacher, IMHO.

Personally, I don't think I'd have a problem showing that movie to a child of _mine_... but that's my call... showing an R-rated movie to 12-year-olds... not the teacher's call to make, but the parents'.

If the teacher had even done something as simple as sent home permission slips - or if all the kids had been 18 years old, it woulda been different... but to exclude the guardian from that decision - it's fucked.

I'm not saying that this film should have been shown to 8th graders, but suing the school board isn't going to solve anything. I say they just want some free money.

And for the record again...that thread title is exactly what I wanted it to be. Not sure why people think I screwed that up...you think I don't know how to spell week?

that's jokes, too bad you didn't fleece the school board out of money for that one. I think Caddyshack is probably worse than Brokeback, what with the non-stop drugs, alcohol, and swearing.

Yeah Brad, but who is the proper person to sue? They say they've had trouble before and this was the last straw, so I really wouldnt know who to sue if I wanted the courts to step in.

If ultimately the board is tasked with approving materials, then it'd be the right defendant I guess. You'd have to assume the lawyer did the research to find out who to serve.

A much worse story today I've seen on tv was about a 6th grade class on some extended field trip, and the teachers there decided to do a "code red" drill. They told the kids there was a gunman and to stay hidden! What in the FUCK is wrong with people... these are children.. you dont do a drill where you tell them someone is going to kill them with a gun if they dont stay hidden, I mean for christs sake!

That's a horrible drill to run. wow.

As far as who to sue, I?d say that they should go after the teacher if they really "need" to sue someone. If it was me and that was my kid, I'd probably use this as a chance to teach the kid a lesson about freedom of speech, etc. Ultimately I'd tell the kid to suck it up, it's the cost of "freedom". That said, I'm not endorsing showing an R rated film to 8th graders, but the fact is that it happened, and the solution is not to sue the school board. What is suing going to teach that kid?

Showing a movie to 12 yr olds that has rather explicit scenes of two naked homos packing fudge isn't something I'd think was important viewing material for kids that age. They should sue the idiot teacher.

At that age we got to see "Failsafe", and Cyrano De Bergerac :D

And one cool teacher had a class party and showed us "Live and let die".

I have to agree, it's not up to the teacher or Sub to make that decision with out parental agreement or notification

If my kid's teacher showed an R rate movie without my permission I'd be peeved too. Regardless of the content. Asking for $500K is stupid. That girl isn't "traumatized". Like she never heard of homos before that movie? She's 12.

When I was in the 9th or 10th grade our teacher brought in mead for us to taste in an attempt to get us interested in Beowulf. She would have been fired on the spot in this day and age.

Though I have to agree - showing an R rated movie should have had parental approval. My son watched a few in HS but there was always a permission slip sent home.

Actually spelt is a word; it is the past tense of spell...look it up if you don't believe me.

it seems to be a colloquial expression for the proper past tense of the word spell, "spelled" - but i'll give that one to you since "booyah" is also now in the dictionary. scary.

love to have heard that conversation at the doc's office. My girl saw two guys kissing and now she's ruined for life. Are they going to shelter her forever that there is an alternative lifestyle?

pretty sure spelt has been in the english language for a while now, in fact I've never used the word spelled. I don't think it has the same ring to it.

Spelt is a word, but it doesn't mean what you think it does. "Spelled" is the correct word, as tASSy said.

Main Entry: spelt
Pronunciation: 'spelt
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English, from Late Latin spelta, of Germanic origin; perhaps akin to Middle High German spelte split piece of wood, Old High German spaltan to split -- more at SPLIT
: an ancient wheat (Triticum spelta syn. T. aestivum spelta) with spikelets containing two light red grains; also : the grain of spelt

we got in trouble for watching Faces of Death in 10th grade during lunch hour and it was a huge scandal.
