Should the government regulate gas prices more?

I see people complaining about the price of gas (hey, I'm one of them) and I see some people asking for the government to step in and get the prices lowered.

What if those same people wanted to step in and get porn prices lowered?

If we allow the government to set gas prices, shouldn't they be allowed to set prices on other products?

What if your state senator wanted to appease his porn hungry fans and determined that we couldn't charge anymore than $5 per month for porn?

Maybe a silly ccomparison, but shouldn't competition determine the price of a product rather than the government? For an industry that doesn't want the government to regulate US, we sure love to tell them how they should regulate others ;-)

I think this can be summed up with "You can't have your cake and eat it too".

If there are people who want supply-side control of the economy, you can't just pick and choose commodities here and there - if someone wants communism you gotta take the whole enchilada.

To experience the wonderous joys of communism in action I suggest visiting Cuba! Look how the people are just dying to swim the 90 miles to Florida just to tell everyone how wonderful Cuba is!

Cuba, si!

Yup

There's a thing called NIMBY (not in my backyard) regarding things like "build more prisons! but, um, not in my backyard", "get rid of toxic waste...but um, not in my back yard"

We need an anagram for businesses who say something like "hey, they charge too much, they need to be regulated, but um, don't regulate my industry"...

Cuba has it's good things, and its bad. Mostly bad, in the area of food availability, But great in the area of medical and schooling.

But those ideas have been proven not to work the way that the leaders like to try and make people think.

Ya and the government has a plan to leverage their highly educated population by moving headlong into the pharmaceutical insdustry.

It's pure slavery - exploiting their people (researchers, doctors, etc) and forcing them to work on whatever the government tells them to, to enrich a select few individuals. It's criminal. Doctor, lawyers, engineers - used and exploited by their government and forced to live in squalor.

Cuba is a sad, sad country. I feel sorry for every single person who is forced to live under that regime. And yes, I have been there, several times.

OPEC and its corruptfullness

Honestly, the Gov't doesn't care about gas prices. They higher they go, the more tax $'s they make off it. When it gets to a breaking point, they let the heads of Big Oil know and they drop it.

Its absolute bullshit how an 'advisor' can drop a bullshit story to the media, stating that it appears the 'Reserve' supply may be lower than expected, the prices shoot way up, then come back a month later and say "whoops, we were wrong, there were more reserve supplies than earlier estimated'.

They regulate it by paying part of the costs or cutting taxes to oil companies.
