It said right in the blurb I quote above that 30 seconds gives time to shut off gas lines, stop public transit and take other precautions to limit damage.

Aren't fires the greatest problem of earthquakes?

bullshit.. even if EVERY gas station had a direct feed to the monitor and instantaeneous signal that iniated shutdown procedure automatically it would fucking take the 30 seconds for the machines to cooldown/shutdown and that doesn't do shit about all the gas in the pipe.. if you turn your garden hose off the fuckers still full of water.
but eh.. since when did i have a urban gas engineering degree.
30 is still dick. public transport? puh-lease it would take 30 seconds to be connected to a driver and then what? use the remaining half a second to gun for the exit of the tunnel?
