I had a little Argument with my wife .. I'm I right or wrong?

I maybe wrong on this one but my intention was good and I'm sticking to my guns. My son is 10 and we are going camping in 2 weeks. I carry a pocket knife all the time and i thought he could handle the responsibility of having his own for the trip. I gave him a little pocket knife (i dulled it a bit ) and sat with him and had a long talk about the dangers of the knife and when and what to use it for. He keeps it in a safe place and cannot take it out of the house unless i say he can. just fishing and camping ..stuff like that.

I kinda forgot to clear this with the wife and she had a fit when she found out. she wanted me to take it away and i said no i think he can handle it and every boy should have a pocket knife at some point . taking it away now would make me look bad and make him feel like she doesn't trust him.

I know i should have talked to her first but am i wrong for letting him have one at 10. she also gets pissed when i let him target shoot with an airsoft gun (while I'm there) I don't see the harm in that either.

What do you guys think? do i need to buy her a gift ..

Kids in the south are given a pocket knife at birth - he'll be fine. You did the right thing by sitting down and talking to him about it instead of just giving it to him.

JUST MAKE SURE HE KNOWS TO TAKE IT OUT OF HIS POCKET BEFORE HE GOES TO SCHOOL!! The "no tolerance" laws have gotten crazy.

When I was slightly older than that a kid in a small costal town I lived in pulled out a swiss army knife his father had given him because I wouldn't let him play with us. I ended up getting a machette out of the shed and well that was my first ever experience with the police.

I dont see a prob with it for the camping trip...it might be a good idea to limit it to that time tho, just in case he decides to sneak it off to school or a friends house to show it off.

You are the best judge of your sons ability to be trusted with it.

My own opinion is the world has gone overboard on so many things that are perfectly safe 99% of the time.

I had a Swiss Army knife around that time and never hurt myself with it. As long as he has some ground rules, shouldn't be a problem.

I gave my son a tackle box full stocked when he was 9, a knife happened to be one of the items. My wife flipped to and it caused a huge stink. Women dont understand that by teaching them to respect guns, knives, bows, etc now that it keeps them from fucking around with the shit when your not around and really hurting themselves.

Dude.. by your wife a gift..

No problem a 10 year old kid having a dulled pocket knife, especially after such a careful talk by you

Who was right last time?
Seems like you have admitted that you should have discussed it and are genuinely sorry and have all the love and respect for her.
Just tell her You were just seizing the opportunity to have a father and son moment like you had with your dad, and how much that meant to you.

Some wimmins do

I'm trying to remember when my brother got his first BB gun - I'm pretty sure he was around 8. He's 41 now and hasn't hurt himself or anyone else. Yet.

I was carrying around a pocket knife at about age 8 (of course, I grew up in rural Wyoming, so everyone had a pocket knife at that age).

It's all about being taught safety and respect for the knife, gun or whatever they are introduced to at that age.

While your wife's concern is understandable, maybe have her sit down with you and your son and all of you discuss safety and the proper use of the knife.

Should have told her you were doing it, most likely..

But a 10 year old with any amount of responsibility is old enough.

And if he cuts his finger or stabs his leg (I did both as a kid numerous times!) he'll learn respect for the knife pretty quick

This really comes down to what you are used to (growing up) and it seems like your wife did not grow up in a place that has nature around it. If she was she would know this is normal and not something to make a deal out of.

That said, I grew up with nature all around and made my own carved boats, flutes etc. by the time I was 10 and earlier. But that was me. My wife did not and would probably have a fit also, like yours did.

Take her to dinner, load her with wine and then tell her you are sorry and will tell her in advance next time. End of story.

PS. And if you get lucky..............................

I grew up in a rural area so I don't think there's anything wrong with what you did. You should have cleared it first, but even if she said no I still would have given him one, lol. In the past 10 year olds have cooked dinner every night, taken care of little ones while parents worked in the field, and the list goes on. Ten is a great age for kids to learn how to properly use tools, like a knife, and also proper safety.

I also think kids should learn how to properly use guns and learn how dangerous they can be when not properly used, but thats another can of worms. I learned about guns when I was 7.

Meet the wife half-way.

He can have the knife - you store the knife when not in use. That way, she/you will know that when he has the knife - he's with an adult who can monitor his use of it. As he gets older, and he's shown responsibility using the knife - such restrictions won't be necessary.

Then...suck up to the wife! It's way to early in the year to not be able to see her naked till the new year!

IMO your only mistake was not telling her advance. As for the knife, it all depends on your son. Some kids that age are old enough to handle it and be responsible, some aren't. Maybe you should make it a camping trip only kind of thing and you keep it when you are at home until he gets a little older.

I've always felt if you teach kids about things they will grow up respecting them and they won't go crazy when they get it later in life because they were sheltered from it in youth. My mom let me have a BB gun when she thought I was old enough to handle it (i was around 13-14 I think) I had a knife around 10-11. We drank a glass of wine with special dinners throughout the year and my mom had let me have girlfriends over and knew I was getting busy with them in my room but she told me she would rather I do it where she knows we are safe then in the back of a car somewhere. She also hammered the use of condoms into me on a nearly daily basis. As a result when I got older I didn't go crazy with any of these things. Sure I've gotten drunk and done some crazy things but I never saw any of these things as taboos so I didn't obsess over getting to do/have them.

I think most dads want to share the world with their sons and most moms want to keep them sheltered from it.

It looks like most agree that it's ok for him to have as long as we have clear rules. He'll only be able to carry it during camping and fishing trips. We did have a long talk about him feeling the need to show it off or take it to school and i explained lightly some of the things that have been going on in the schools and that it would have huge consequences .

I think the only mistake i made was not talking to her first. it was kinda a last minute thing. I had the knife in our fishing gear and it's small and figured it would be great for him while camping. So i called him in and had the talk and gave it to him. then we picked a safe place for him to keep it and went over the rules. I didn't mean to step on her toes but it just happen.

I'm sure if we had girls she would be dressing them up and putting on make-up why before i thought it was time. I say let boys raise boys ..

You are good to talk to him and allow him responsibility.. Your wife just can't help but think back to that little baby in her arms and recoil in horror at the thought that her baby could have a knife. Talk to her about it, let her talk to him about it and make sure she's comfortable with his level of responsibility, but remind her that eventually kids have to grow up and we have to let go. As a mother of three, believe me I can tell you it is heartwrenching to go from having that baby depend on you for every need to not wanting to do anything but find out when you are cooking dinner. Help her realize that her fear is out of love, but it's not reasonable fear if the boy is responsible enough to handle it.

Taking away the knife at this point will only make your son think that you don't trust him. Its better to learn the responsibilities of having a knife from the parents than from the streets.

Yeah... taking it away would send the wrong signal to the kid at this point.

10's old enough to learn the responsibility that comes with a knife... kid's gotta learn it at some point, and the earlier the better, imho.

Help your wife see that. You have 8 years remaining to make the kid a man.

You are perfectl;y right, no gift for her, what your giving your son is a normal part of our hunter gatherer genetics! tell her if she does not understand that then she never will just understand that men and women are different and accept that, and accept that a 10 year old bly can handle a dull knife to camping with..Shit I had a freiken Rambo knife at 9 years old, and I still have 3 out of 4 limbs attached ;)

No Mini Van .. i won that one. I convinced her to get a Honda Pilot ... I fully loaded it and talked it up and she went for it. I don't mind driving that and it covers all her needs. Juicy and I just drove it to Detroit last week .. about 1400 mile total and it was nice.

Yeah my dad pulled that bullshit of a dulled knife on me as well at the age of 10. Never thought I would grab the wet stone, and sharpen it.

I did. Never cut myself, or anyone else.

Well see you can compromise with her. So just do the same thing here.

If she doesnt trust her 10 year old with a dull pocket knife then she is failing as a mother.
