You're married.
If you expect to stay married apologize and move on. Its that simple. |

Yeah... taking it away would send the wrong signal to the kid at this point.
10's old enough to learn the responsibility that comes with a knife... kid's gotta learn it at some point, and the earlier the better, imho. Help your wife see that. You have 8 years remaining to make the kid a man. |

You are perfectl;y right, no gift for her, what your giving your son is a normal part of our hunter gatherer genetics! tell her if she does not understand that then she never will just understand that men and women are different and accept that, and accept that a 10 year old bly can handle a dull knife to camping with..Shit I had a freiken Rambo knife at 9 years old, and I still have 3 out of 4 limbs attached ;)

its perfectly normal for a boy
maybe your wife needs a girl as well? :) |
Yeah my dad pulled that bullshit of a dulled knife on me as well at the age of 10. Never thought I would grab the wet stone, and sharpen it.
I did. Never cut myself, or anyone else. |

If she doesnt trust her 10 year old with a dull pocket knife then she is failing as a mother.

he is old enough for Cub Scouts, so he is old enough for a switchblade.
How is he supposed to make his pinewood derby car if he can't whittle? |
My dad gave me a pocket knife when I was 8 I believe. He kept it at the top of his closet, and I was only allowed to use it when he gave it to me, generally when we went camping. He kept it safe, and I knew that if I was good during the week I might get to use it on the weekend with my dad.
I'm all for a 10yo boy to have a knife, but these days YOU need to keep it locked up until you go on your trip. |

My life is under my control ... Perrie and me don't tell each other what to do :) YOU on the other hand ... sound vastly insecure about your manhood and therefore have to resort to neanderthal 'cock' or 'dick' power statements :) YOU grow a pair... instead of PRETENDING to have any :) |
Personally, I think he stands a better chance of hurting himself with a dull knife as he is forced to make it work rather than letting it work.

i say tell him that he can have it for camping trips etc and that it is HIS knife but do not allow him to have it all of the time. maybe let him know that you are storing it in a safe place for him. my main concern would be that he could show it to another kid who might steal it, do something naughty with it and ultimately leave you responsible since you were the access point for said knife.
and yes buy your wife a present. |

fuck the gift on this one |

Very simple answer. You are wrong. Doesn't matter what it's about, you are always wrong. Enjoy married life. |
And as far as not telling her - well, you probably should have...
But liken it to her going out and getting a daughter's ear's pierced, or some other mother/daughter bonding thing... It's not something you'd _expect_ to be brought in on.... and you just weren't thinking. I mean, the knife's a tool... would you think of cluing her in on buying the kid a ratchet? |
I'm not so sure about that...

After reading a few of these replies i decided to Move the storage place of the knife to the closet of the office. it's on the middle shelf and he can reach it if he wanted but it's not as easy as in his room on the top shelf. he understands that he can't take it without asking me and he's cool with it being in my office. I told him it's not that i don't trust him but I'm worried about a friend taking it or his little brother getting in his room (not that he could reach it but you never know .. they find ways) my office is locked at most times unless I'm in there and he didn't feel like i took it away from him. As for the wife i showed her this thread and she seems better about it. atleast she doesn't think I'm insane ..:1orglaugh |
Want to see a visual definition of the term ape shit. Get him this for his 11th bday lol :

Thought all 10-year-olds were old enough for buck knifes.
|
I think that is perfectly fine, as long as he uses it for those purposes only, and doesn't end up taking it to school or something like that. Trust him with it until he proves you wrong (if he proves you wrong). I think you made a smart decision though.
|
Also,
Personally when I think I was around 11 or 12 I collected cool looking knives out of those magazines. I ended up having like 50 different knives, some were like 2 feet in length, and I also had real throwing stars, throwing knives, and every kind of cool colector knife that was around. This was when I was 11 or 12 years old I think. I never really did anything wrong with them, I just liked to show them off to friends when they came over to the house. Although, I did end up stabbing and killing both our dogs a few months after I got these knives, but that is a whole different story :) |
i don't think there is anything wrong with it at all.
it actually sounds quite sweet. |
